Percussion/Drumline Specialist

Position Overview: Iowa City West High School is seeking a Percussion Specialist to join our Marching Band team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in percussion performance with the ability to instruct and motivate high school percussionists. This position will work closely with the band directors and other technicians to ensure the highest level of musical and performance excellence.  Band camp dates are the mornings of August 11-15.  Daily rehearsals are from 8:50-10:30am once school begins on August 25.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide specialized percussion instruction to high school students in a marching band setting.

• Teach percussion techniques and marching fundamentals.

• Work with students individually and in small groups to refine musical skills and improve overall performance.

• Offer constructive feedback during rehearsals to help students achieve their personal and group goals.

• Support a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel motivated and encouraged to reach their full potential.

• Maintain communication with the band directors regarding student progress and any concerns related to the percussion section.

Qualifications:

• A strong background in percussion/drumline performance.

• Knowledge of marching band techniques and music interpretation.

• Ability to motivate and inspire students of varying skill levels.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively with a team of other music educators, technicians, and volunteers.

• Positive attitude and strong leadership skills.

Desired Attributes:

• Availability to attend as many rehearsals and performances as possible.  

• Previous experience teaching or working with high school or middle school students in a marching band or similar music setting.

• Ability to problem-solve and adapt to different learning styles.

• Passion for marching band and a commitment to fostering a positive student experience.
