BASIC FUNCTION:


The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) teaches students in five high school subjects; thus, the HEP Instructor must have a wide-ranging knowledge of these areas (math, science, reading, writing, and social studies). In addition, the incumbent must have experience working with non-traditional and at-risk students. Many of the students speak English as a second language or not at all. The HEP Instructor must be able to teach these students in an effective manner over the course of the HEP Program. In addition, the HEP Instructor must have cultural sensitivity to the needs of migrant farm workers. Furthermore, the HEP Instructor must be flexible and versatile in order to teach students with a diverse array of learning impediments.
 
 
The HEP instructor will be dealing with students from diverse backgrounds. This position will require the incumbent to be familiar with issues concerning migrant and seasonal farm workers in order to better assist the students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  • Develops, revises and evaluates curriculum to meet the needs of the students.
  • Delivers education by using effective and appropriate oral communications skills and providing students with clear and professional written communications and instructions.
  • Provides classroom instruction in a variety of subjects.
  • Establishes standards expected for student achievement. Monitors and assesses progress toward expected standards.
  • Maintains current records on all students, including accurate attendance records.
  • Meets periodically with program director for updates and planning.
  • Participates in program activities, including staff meetings.
  • Establishes and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Engages with students by constructive interaction to optimize learning.
  • Works and interacts with peers, as individuals and/or in team/group settings, in a professional manner that contributes to the program’s academic achievement goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of issues concerning migrant and seasonal farm workers. Requires knowledge of development of and use of multimedia and alternative learning aids.   Requires a working knowledge of personal computer and multimedia equipment operations including common office productivity software, internet, and computer-aided teaching programs. Requires professional level writing skills sufficient to prepare class materials and reports.

Ability to work with students from different cultures, socioeconomic and educational background. Requires the skill sets to perform the responsibilities of the position including delivery of instruction in classroom and lab settings. Requires the ability to learn, interpret, and apply District, State, and Federal requirements and objectives for academic achievement. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of learning aids including those that are computer aided.    Requires the ability to develop and maintain a productive classroom environment. Must be able to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively. Must be able to communicate in a professional manner, in both formal and informal settings with students, fellow teachers, staff and parents. Must be able to oversee the activities of instructional support staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations are minimal.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The position incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Requires the ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground level files. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard to operate microcomputer and other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is required. Teaching credential preferred. One year of teaching experience is required, preferably in a high school equivalency program.
 
May require a valid driver’s license.
