Position Duties
Our history
West Hills Community College District has a rich history of serving the educational needs of the west side of the San Joaquin Valley for more than 80 years. The district covers nearly 3,500 square miles with colleges in Lemoore and Coalinga, the Firebaugh Center and three child development centers throughout neighboring rural communities, and the Farm of the Future facility at the north end of Coalinga.
Summary
Lemoore College (LC) is offering a full-time, tenure track position in Counseling. The successful candidate must be dedicated to serving students of diverse backgrounds, skills, and abilities. Lemoore College is seeking a candidate to provide engagement and discipline expertise that will contribute to program innovation and dynamic counseling approaches focused on student success. Under the direction of the assigned administrator, counselors assist with the leadership and direction of assigned counseling, guidance, student support, and / or student success functions within the scope of the student services philosophy of West Hills Community College District.
The successful candidate will exhibit a passion for serving and educating a diverse student population through culturally responsive counseling and student support strategies. The successful candidate will demonstrate the use of effective practices for engaging students with diverse needs, backgrounds, and academic goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for incorporating the use of technology into the delivery of counseling and student support services. Service delivery will include the development of non-traditional approaches and strategies to support students enrolled in distance learning / online, hybrid, video conference (two-way interactive courses) dual enrollment, etc. courses.
Additional responsibilities include involvement in counseling, student success, student support, instructional, and department activities; student recruitment; advising; developing and reviewing curriculum; developing and accessing learning and service outcomes consistent with the needs of the diverse backgrounds and abilities of students. Counseling faculty work with other faculty (fulltime and adjunct) on program review, literacy, articulation, and interdisciplinary projects, initiatives, etc. Faculty participation in college governance and other required campus meetings is expected, including, but not limited to, Academic Senate appointments to standing councils, committees, and / or a variety of task forces. Counseling assignments may include day, evening, and weekend hours.
Essential duties and responsibilities :
Provide academic / personal / career / and financial aid counseling and advising services for students.Provide crisis counseling.Plan, develop, coordinate, implement, and provide matriculation services.Develop and coordinate college plans that facilitate and support student success and completion.Preform and facilitate student services operational processes and data entry functions.Develop and assess innovative and diverse approaches to counseling, student support, and learning that meet the social, developmental, and academic needs of a culturally diverse student population and improve student learning, personal well-being retention and success.Implement contemporary matriculation, counseling, student support, and teaching methods that enhance learning and facilitate student success and completion utilizing technology not limited to : Canvas or other learning management system(s); eLumen other software / computer aided instruction and multi-media; Microsoft Office Suite; District student information management system(s) (Civitas); and District information management system(s) (Colleague).Work within and across disciplines to develop and implement a guided pathways model to promote student success and completion.Work with other faculty to design, implement, and assess service and learning outcomes to improve the quality of educational delivery and ensure student success.Champion collaborative practices in instruction that lead to an active, student centered environment and close equity gaps.Participate in faculty responsibilities such as : program development; course and curriculum development, review, articulation, and evaluation; assist in budget preparation; program review; committees; research; accreditation; and special projects as needed.Maintain files, records, etc. Meet reporting and compliance deadlines.Build strategic alliances and campus networks to enhance student life; and participate in campus-wide activities on a regular basis, including involvement in extracurricular activities as assigned (e.g., student club advisor, student newspaper, etc.)Evaluate in-state, out-of-state, and foreign transcripts.Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with social service, mental health, and health care providers. Develop a comprehensive referral base for students in need of extended care or assistance.Assignment includes day, evening, and weekend hours.Travel to all district locations.Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.Develop and maintain close working relationships with faculty, feeder high schools and community resource agencies.Provide on-going training to counselors, advisors, faculty, and staff.Bilingual preferred (but not required).Perform other related duties as assigned.Qualification

Knowledge of, and familiarity with, curriculum offerings, enrollment trends; requirements for Associate degrees and Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT); general transfer requirements and processes; and general education patterns in secondary and postsecondary education.Demonstrated understanding of Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Guided Pathways, and other student success initiatives.Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.Ability to develop and implement specialized counseling programs and services for low-income and educationally underserved students.Knowledge of, and familiarity with the mission, vision, and philosophies of California Community Colleges. Counseling and guidance principles and theory including demonstrated understanding of culturally responsive counseling and teaching strategies.Demonstrated understanding of issues of equity in higher education and strategies to address equity gaps.Ability to Work with and assist students who have a wide range of skills, motivation, goals, as well as social and academic needs.Interact with persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Manage multiple tasks and duties effectively.Follow-up with students in a timely manner.Assimilate large volumes of changing academic information.Interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures to students.Handle sensitive material in a confidential manner.Ability to work with student record management, scheduling, and educational planning software.Ability to work with computers and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students on-campus and through distance education platforms.Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution.Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's counseling, instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support students.Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators, and staff) as well as off-campus community and education partners.Evidence of a strong commitment to professional growth and development and the continued innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching.Education and Experience
Evidence of sensitivity and responsiveness to as well as an understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and / or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded educational services and practices.
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent
NOTE : A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
