Assistant Director of Student Services - District Office


12 month position. The start date for this position is 7/1/2024 or as soon as possible.


Overview of Position
:

The Assistant Director of Student Services supports the vision and leadership for the West Linn-Wilsonville School District's programs for children with disabilities from early intervention through post high school. The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating with schools to provide quality special education services to the West Linn-Wilsonville School District's children and families. The Assistant Director works with the fiscal, personnel, and public relations operations and within the department and is responsible for compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The Assistant Director also supports systems throughout the district for student achievement and support beyond special education. These additional systems of support may include school counseling, school health services, transition services, and crisis response supports.


Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Demonstrate foresight, examine issues and take initiatives to improve the quality of education in the community.
  • Embrace and encourage the acceptance of diversity and inclusive practices
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, in individual, small group, and large group settings and in various publications.
  • Demonstrate instructional leadership.
  • Analyze and present effective data interpretations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of the educational organization.
  • Effectively manage the resources for which he/she is responsible including personnel, finances, facilities, programs and time.
  • Maintain a familiarity with current educational issues and all laws/educational guidance/regulations that pertain to students with disabilities.
  • Use supervision, staff development and performance evaluation to improve the performance of employees as assigned, using procedures consistent with the state and local Teacher/Support Performance Evaluation Plan, with the purpose of improving educational outcomes for students.
  • Assist the special education department in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, including maintaining appropriate data and training staff in case management and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain close communication with Assistant Superintendent of Student Services in all matters of importance.
  • Assist in the professional development process, including development, coordination and implementation of staff in-service training, facilitating professional learning communities, and other professional learning activities.
  • Provide responsive instructional support to educational staff as needed to enhance the provision of services to students served by special education.
  • Attend training and conduct research to explore up-to-date program models to more effectively meet the needs of individual students.
  • Assist with the implementation of new and existing program models.
  • Act as the District Representative of the IEP team when appropriate.
  • Assist principals, teachers and support staff in working with parents when needed.
  • Other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the immediate supervisor and/or the superintendent.


Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of current Oregon laws, policies, administrative rules, and model programs related to general education and special education services for pre-school through post high school.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current theory, research, and effective practices in the areas of evaluation and instruction in special education for children and students with a variety of disabilities.
  • Proven skill in providing strong leadership to build consensus among diverse groups, including department personnel and partner agencies.


Educational Requirements:

Master's Degree in Special Education or other related field;

Oregon Administrator License;

Three years of recent successful experience in general and/or special education administration in public schools preferred.
