WMFC Custodian Position

West Midland Family Center is seeking a passionate individual to keep the building clean and sanitized. We’re currently looking for a person to work 20-40 hours a week. If you are a dependable, motivated, self-starting individual who is able to tackle any cleaning task this position is for you.

  • Position: Custodian
  • Direct Supervisor: Maintenance Director
  • Wage: hourly pay based on experience

  • Main location: West Midland Family Center- 4011 W Isabella Rd, Midland
  • Some offsite work may be required
  • Schedule: 20-40 Hours. Ideally available in afternoons, evenings, occasional Saturdays, and for events
  • As part of a small team, situations arise where schedules need to flex to cover for others or due to program needs.
  • Background checks are required for employment to begin

As part of a small team, you will have a significant impact in helping keep West Midland Family Center functioning properly. To do this successfully you will need to be honest, trustworthy, dependable, and diligent. At times you will need to work by yourself and as part of a team. At all times you must act in a manner that promotes the values of West Midland Family Center. Since this role supports licensed childcare and preschool departments, passing a background check is required. This will include but is not limited to ICHAT, DHS, and PSOR.

III. Essential Functions

The mission of the department you will be joining is to keep the building safe, running smoothly and looking presentable.

  • This position will regularly keep all areas of the building clean using tools like: a broom, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, an automated floor scrubber, carpet cleaning equipment, etc.
  • This position will regularly clean and stock commercial, preschool and childcare restrooms.
  • This position will provide support to clear plugged toilets, clean up puke and other incidents.
  • This position will clean a two-lane bowling center, gym floors, and other equipment.
  • This position will help with routine room changeovers by setting up/ tearing down tables, chairs, batting cage, gym equipment, etc.
  • Limited use of technology is required to communicate with others using email, phone and portable radios.
  • This position may assist with winter grounds work, the ability to clear sidewalks and apply salt is desired.
  • This position is part of our internal emergency responder team. This requires you to maintain certification in first aid, CPR, and be willing to help out with situations that arise. If you don’t have current first aid or CPR training WMFC will provide the required training.
  • This role provides building closing and evening support functions and will need to flex to cover events and changes to building hours.
  • Notify supervisor(s) of emergency and risky situations or behaviors in a timely manner.
  • Follow and implement WMFC health and safety policies. All health and safety information is covered in Orientations, Safety Days, and CPR/First Aid training.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

IV. Additional Functions

  • This position may help with groundwork; familiarity with outdoor equipment such as: mowers, string trimmers, tractors, pressure washers, snow blowers, salters, etc. is desired.
  • This position may assist with pool opening, closing, and keeping the chemicals stocked.

V. Qualifications and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in commercial building cleaning preferred.
  • Experience with typical tools used to complete the essential skills listed above.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, work with others and individually.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple departments/team members.

VI. Work Conditions

Environment:

This position works indoors and outdoors. Exposure to weather elements, snow, heat, sun, dirt, dust, unpleasant smells, and/or loud noises are possible.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and converse with employees, maintain a stationary position, move/traverse, position self to clean or work in various spaces and positions such as kneeling, bending, or reaching for extended periods of time. The worker may be required to operate in close quarters, crawl spaces, attics, small rooms, and narrow aisles and passageways. The worker may be required to Ascend/descend ladders. The employee will be required to meet the physical demands of the job. This position requires the ability to physically transport boxes, bags and buckets of up to 25 pounds. Being able to lift and dump bags and buckets up to 65 LBs is desired.

Hazards:

The employee in this position may be exposed to certain hazards as part of the duties and responsibilities of the position such as pool chemicals, cleaning chemicals, dust, animals, insects, maintenance equipment, noisy environments, driving and working in adverse weather conditions, and the possibility of being a lone worker. This role is also an internal emergency responder and is required to properly clean up biohazards. WMFC will provide the required personnel protective equipment (PPE) needed to mitigate or eliminate these hazards and all employees will be trained on the appropriate use of PPE.
