Position Type : Regular, Full-Time

Reports To : Vice President, School Music Services

We're looking for a Repair Manager who doesn't just love instruments but loves making them sing again. This role combines technical mastery, leadership skills, and a passion for quality service to ensure that every instrument that crosses our threshold is ready to hit the stage (or the classroom) in perfect harmony.

In this role you will oversee all aspects of musical instrument repair operations, ensuring high-quality service, timely repairs, and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities include streamlining repair processes, maintaining inventory of parts and tools, providing training and support to staff, and managing customer communications. This individual will work closely with sales and customer service teams to meet client needs and ensure instruments are returned in optimal condition, contributing to the company's overall success in the music industry.

What You'll Be Doing

As the maestro of our repair operations, you'll be tasked with the following essential duties and responsibilities. (Other duties may be assigned as business needs dictate.) :

Parts Ordering and Tool Maintenance :

  • Manage inventory of repair parts, tools, and materials, ensuring adequate stock levels for efficient operations.
  • Research and establish relationships with vendors to ensure timely procurement of high-quality parts at competitive prices.
  • Oversee the maintenance and replacement of repair equipment to ensure all technicians have access to the tools they need to work efficiently.
  • Implement a tracking system for parts usage and tool maintenance, optimizing budget and minimizing downtime.

Policy and Procedure Development :

  • Develop and document repair policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency, safety, and high-quality repairs across the team.
  • Continuously assess and refine procedures to improve efficiency and maintain up-to-date practices in line with industry standards based on NAPBIRT.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations including OSHA.
  • Training and Developing Technicians :

  • Provide hands-on training to new technicians, ensuring they understand repair standards, safety protocols, and instrument-specific techniques.
  • Develop ongoing professional development programs for technicians, including new repair methods, technology, and industry advancements.
  • Monitor technician performance, offering constructive feedback, mentorship, and coaching to help them improve their skills.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Hold technicians accountable for meeting performance standards, including quality of repairs, turnaround times, and customer service.
  • Conduct regular evaluations and performance reviews, setting measurable goals and offering clear expectations for team members.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of repairs, part usage, and customer communications to maintain transparency and accountability within the team.
  • Address and resolve any issues related to repair delays, customer complaints, or technician performance promptly and effectively.
  • Instrument Repair :

  • Perform repairs on a wide range of musical instruments, including brass, woodwind, string, and electronic instruments, depending on expertise.
  • Troubleshoot complex repairs or specialized cases requiring advanced knowledge or experience.
  • Maintain personal certifications or stay updated on industry trends and new repair techniques.
  • Set a high standard for workmanship and serve as a model for other technicians within the team.
  • Education, Experience & Qualifications

    Required Qualifications :

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in musical instrument repair, including proficiency with a variety of instruments such as brass, woodwinds, strings, and electronic instruments.
  • Understanding of industry standards, repair techniques, and maintenance protocols for both common and specialized instruments.
  • Proven experience in leading a team of technicians, including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Strong ability to mentor and develop staff, ensuring high performance and skill growth within the team.
  • Certification from an accredited institution
  • Familiarity with repair parts procurement and supplier relationships.
  • Physical Demands

    Let's face it, some repairs can be heavy lifting-up to 70 lbs., to be exact. You'll also need strong hands for intricate work and the ability to stand, walk, and move around the shop. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
