Job Overview
The Swamper with Backup Rigger Responsibilities assists with the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of drilling rigs and oil and gas-related equipment. This role involves working alongside riggers and operators to ensure the proper handling of loads and supporting rigging operations when needed. The position requires physical stamina, attention to safety, and the ability to work as part of a team in fast-paced oil and gas environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with loading and unloading drilling rigs and oil and gas equipment, ensuring proper handling and securing of loads.
- Act as a ground guide for equipment operators during transport and staging operations.
- Ensure all rigging equipment (chains, shackles, straps, etc.) is properly stored, inspected, and ready for use.
- Support riggers as needed by preparing, organizing, and delivering rigging components to the job site.
- Use tag lines to help stabilize loads during lifting operations.
- Provide proper crane signals to the crane operator when acting as a backup rigger.
- Assist in rigging pole trucks, tandems, or other oil and gas equipment as required.
- Perform pre- and post-operation equipment inspections to identify and report any potential safety issues.
- Clean and maintain work areas, tools, and equipment to ensure a safe and organized job site.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, company policies, and OSHA regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Participate in ongoing safety training and ensure compliance with safety standards during all job activities.
Essential Job Functions
- Lifting and Carrying: Regularly lift and carry rigging components, equipment, and tools weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with riggers, operators, and drivers to ensure efficient and safe operations.
- Adaptability: Transition between swamper and rigger responsibilities as job demands change.
- Environmental Adaptability: Work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and precipitation.
- Physical Stamina: Perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, including climbing, bending, and standing.
Qualifications
- Experience:
- Previous experience as a swamper or in a similar role within oil and gas operations is preferred.
- Familiarity with rigging techniques and load handling equipment is a plus.
- Certifications:
- Certified rigging and signaling credentials are preferred and will be required if not already held.
- Skills:
- Basic knowledge of crane signaling and rigging techniques.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety practices.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Willingness to work at heights and in challenging outdoor environments.
Work Schedule
This position may require flexible hours, including overnight travel, weekends, and extended shifts, to meet the demands of oil and gas operations.
