What are the responsibilities and job description for the Boiler Apprentice position at West Tech Boiler Works?
Objectives/Summary
- Performs routine inspection and maintenance on boilers and auxiliary equipment.
- Completes appropriate maintenance/repair forms and records.
- Performs thread pipe fitting, re-tubing work on boilers and equipment.
- Assist other mechanics.
- Keeps work and shop area clean. Maintains and repairs on shop equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
General Knowledge & Skills:
- Basic knowledge of boilers and/or related mechanical equipment, or the ability to obtain.
- Basic skill in pipe-fitting preferred, or the ability to obtain
- Welding and fit-up skills preferred, or the ability to obtain
- Ability to perform routine maintenance. Equipment Operated * Ability to properly utilize basic hand tools and shop equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent. * One (1) or two (2) years previous experience in pipefitting or boiler maintenance and repair, and/or mechanical equipment maintenance

- Physical Requirements
- Be able to bend, kneel, stand, squat and climb frequently.
- Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds, carry 50 pounds, roll out tubing and push/pull heavy materials w/mobile equipment.
- Must be able to work in confined space/areas.
- Must pass a physical (fit test), hearing and eye exam
- A valid driver's license is required with a clean record. Must be insurable with no major infractions. Job will require some travel. Applicants must pass pre-employment background and an initial drug screening test.
- Must be self-motivated individual who works independently, as well as in a team atmosphere. Good customer service skills are mandatory.
- Must be professionally presentable, must have good customer skills and strong communication skills, must be able to operate independently and communicate efficiently and effectively with both the customer and management.
- Must be detail oriented in completing work orders, all required forms, summaries, and checklist daily or as required in procedures manual.
- Must have strong language skills as well as industry specific vocabulary.
- Basic mathematics, algebra, and formula knowledge are required.
- Must have very strong reasoning and problem solving skills.
Compensation:
- Excellent starting pay depending on experience
- Quarterly bonuses (Profit sharing)
- Time and a half, double time for weekend, holiday and after hours service calls.
- Vacation: 40 hrs a year to start. 8 hrs accrued per year after, with no cap!
- Sick Pay: 40 hrs per year.
