Job Description Summary:
Responsible for day to day guidance of technical and non-technical personnel. Facilitate management with the oversight of technical functions and work flow efficiency by directing resources and personnel to meet production standards. Acts as a technical resource within the department and helps to resolve problems associated with protocols, equipment, interpretation of test results and system interfaces. Must possess Clinical Lab Scientist degree certified by ASCP or equivalent as a technologist. Under the direct supervision of the manager/supervisor. Incumbents are subject to overtime and callback by the department as designated by the hospital. Must have five years of experience as a Clinical Lab Scientist working at least 1248 hours/year within the last 7 years. Two of the five years must have been as a CLS II.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs and determines the accuracy of routine and special laboratory tests in designated sections of the laboratory.
- Evaluates and reports test results as instructed by test procedure or section procedure.
- Performs, calculates, analyzes, interprets, and record valid results.
- Identifies problems that may affect test performance or test results and takes immediate corrective action.
- Reports problems to supervisory personnel and assists in resolving them.
- Prepare reagents, quality control, and calibrators according to established criteria and evaluate results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated.
- Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment.
- Document and maintains records or preventive maintenance, and troubleshoots and takes appropriate steps to resolve malfunctions on assigned instruments.
- Assists in evaluating new instruments and in establishing maintenance protocols with approval of supervisor and pathologist.
- Assists in reviewing and writing policies, procedures, and preventive maintenance manuals assigned by supervisor and keeping them current.
- Assist management with training, education and competency of personnel on equipment, policies and procedures and other job duties as assigned.
- Inventories, recommends and submits orders, receives and stores supplies for assigned area.
- Instructs students and assists in orientation and evaluation of new personnel as assigned.
- Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures.
- Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.
- RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification will be provided to staff assigned to handle hazardous waste (alcohols, xylene, and stain) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the dock.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from a NACCLS approved program or equivalent.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
- MT/CLS (ASCP) or equivalent
- TN State License (Must obtain State of TN license within six months of hire date).
- Maintain State of TN licensure by completing continuing education as required by State of not less than 12 CE hours annually.
EXPERIENCE:
- Five years as a clinical laboratory scientist working at least 1248 hours/year within the last seven years.
- Personnel should possess a level of knowledge through education, training, and or experience to perform technical duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures normally acquired by 3 months to one year of on-the-job training and orientation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life-span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their specific age-specified needs to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies, procedures, and Quality Assurance.
INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Communication and verbal skills to schedule procedures, report results, and obtain patient information with nursing personnel on a frequent basis and with physicians and office staff on an occasional basis.
- Interpersonal skills with patients to obtain specimens and to perform special skills in the laboratory on an occasional basis.
- Ability to perform assigned duties within a work group.
- Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life-span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specified needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/area/department's policies, procedures, and/or Quality Plus Plan. Ages of patients served are neonate through geriatric.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lead medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians, and support personnel in a specific laboratory section (s).
