Position Summary
Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Service Manager. Performs Utah State emissions and inspections on City vehicles, performs oil changes, Tire repairs, Mount and balance tires, diagnose charging system and replace batteries, perform on-board diagnostic utilizing computerized scan equipment, clean shop, Assist Mechanics with major repairs.
Starting Pay:
Additional pay may be provided depending on experience
Mechanic II: $23.40
Mechanic III: $24.34
Mechanic IV: $26.33
Mechanic V: $28.47
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt
Schedule: 40-hours per week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform automotive & light truck fluid changes.
- Repair and mount and balance automotive & light truck tires.
- Perform on board diagnostic.
- Perform Utah State emissions tests.
- Perform automotive & light truck brake jobs.
- Diagnose charging system and make appropriate repairs.
- Perform normal work required for seasonal equipment preparation and maintenance, i.e. snowplow blade replacement, etc.
- Consult with Service Manager and/or Fleet Manager prior to performing extensive or costly repairs.
- Immediately take appropriate measures to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
- Reports safety concerns immediately to the Service Manager or the Fleet Manager.
- Attends safety training/meetings as required.
- Basic computer skills which include utilizing email, internet and the City Fleet Software Programs.
- Perform services required by the Manufacturer and the City Fleet Scheduled Maintenance Program.
- Other duties may be assigned.
In addition, Mechanic III will:
- Diagnose repair & recharge AC system.
- Diagnose & replace suspension and steering components.
- Install emergency lights & equipment.
- Install city decals.
- Remove and replace two-way radio systems.
- Remove and replace engines and transmission.
- Decommission city vehicles & equipment.
- Perform normal work required for seasonal equipment preparation and maintenance, i.e. snowplow blade replacement, etc.
- Consult with the Fleet Service Manager and/or Fleet Manager prior to performing extensive or costly repairs.
In addition, Mechanic IV will:
- Diagnose & repair diesel engine.
- Perform Utah State safety inspections emissions (Gas & Diesel) test.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring schematics.
- Ability to perform and teach other mechanics to diagnose problems, make repairs and adjustments on all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to make major repairs and adjustments to different types of handheld construction equipment including but not limited to: Gas powered pumps, Blowers, Trimmers, Fans, Saws.
In addition, Mechanic V will:
- Fire apparatus aerial inspections, maintenance, service, and repairs.
- Fire apparatus valve inspections, maintenance, rebuilds, repairs, and replacements.
- Fire apparatus pump inspections, maintenance, rebuilds, repairs, and replacements.
- Fire apparatus heavy duty independent front suspension rebuilds, repairs, and replacements.
- Fire apparatus & ambulance HVAC rebuilds, repairs, and replacements.
- Diagnose and repair driveline braking systems.
- Maintenance on hydraulic generator located on fire apparatus & ambulance.
- Assist with annual fire apparatus pump test certifications.
- Navigate and utilize factory software.
- Make repairs and adjustment to air brake systems.
- Repair heavy duty air suspension and tag axles.
- Ability to make major repairs and adjustments to different types of construction and heavy equipment including hydraulic components.
- Assist other mechanics in performing major repairs such as over- hauls and major repairs for a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered road and stationary equipment.
- Ability to weld both stick and wire-feed, fabricate, manufacturer, and rebuild parts.

- Ability to read and interpret documents such as wiring schematics, safety rules, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions.
Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Mechanic II requires at least (1) year related experience/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Mechanic III requires at least (4) years of related experience/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Mechanic IV requires at least (5) years of related experience/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Mechanic V requires at least (8) years of related experience/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
- Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to use mathematical skills including basic math, algebra and geometry to solve complex problems related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License.
- The following certifications must be obtained within 12 months of employment. Associated testing fees covered by the Fleet division, hands-on training provided.
- Emissions License
- ASE Entry Level Automobile
- ASE Entry Level Medium/Heavy Truck
- ASE A4 - A7
- ASE G1 - Auto Maintenance and light repair
- ASE T8
- Ford Stars Certifications
Mechanic III - V will be required to either have or obtain additional certifications within 12 months of employment.
Physical Demands

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

- Mechanics are required to clean and maintain a safe work area at all times.
Work Environment
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts and machinery.

- Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
- Exposure to stress situations inherent in dealing with fellow employees, the public, constant deadlines, varying workloads and long work hours.
- As support staff to emergency crews, employee may be subject to temporary or permanent shift changes, mandatory overtime, and call outs as deemed appropriate to provide necessary services.
