Leads and supervises personnel in right of way maintenance activities and garbage can maintenance and sanitation contract support in the Street Operations Division of the Public Works Department.
Starting Pay: $30.80 - $36.57 per hour; additional pay depending on experience
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Schedule: 40 hours per week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises staff and manages methods, equipment, schedules, materials, and resources in the performance of right of way cleanup and weed maintenance in the right of way and in drainage basins. May be assigned to prepare and manage maintenance contracts. Also required to supervise or participate in snow removal activities.
- The Sanitation and Right of Way Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for mentoring and developing assigned employees, providing constructive feedback and support. Supervisor advocates for assigned employees, seeking opportunities to help them advance their career.
- Daily work schedule is to be the same schedule worked by the rest of the employees in the division.
- At least weekly, it is expected that the Supervisor will work side-by-side with their crew to develop relationships, set the expectations for a full day’s work and ensure efficient and effective performance of the work.
- Works in place of absent crew members to enable continuity of work.
- Ensure that traffic control devices such as signs, flags, cones and barricades are utilized in accordance with the MUTCD when crews are working under conditions exposed to traffic.
- Ensure that crew members are trained on equipment and safety procedures, including confined space entry.
- Ensure compliance with the Public Works Storm Water Management Plan in work activities.
- Maintain assigned areas in the shop or yard are clean and organized.
- Ensures that equipment and vehicles are maintained and cleaned regularly.
- Respond to emergency callouts at any time. Required to be on-call regularly to receive and respond to emergency calls as assigned.
- Survey and keep records on infrastructure conditions and maintenance using databases such as GIS systems and CityWorks. Work with crew leaders to maintain work records in CityWorks and work to ensure high efficiency is attained.
- Track and follow up on complaints from citizens.
- Ensure that the City receives the lowest price possible when purchasing materials or equipment by complying with the City’s procurement code.
- Work with other departments or divisions on various projects.
- Perform other routine maintenance or emergency repairs as needed. Use judgment to perform various repairs or maintenance operations.
- Research and implement innovative technologies, products, equipment, systems, and processes to improve infrastructure quality and efficiency of maintenance activities.
- Plan daily activities based on the results of the inspections.
- Coordinate the Neighborhood Dumpster Program, working closely with Public Works Utility Billing and others in various City departments. Acts as a liaison between the City’s garbage collection contractor and the City on matters needing attention in the field.
- Follows up on issues with the bulky waste program as made aware by Utility Billing.
- Supervises delivery, and maintenance of the City’s garbage can inventory.
- Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements
- Must be capable of leading a team in the successful execution of their responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Plus eight (8) years of experience on a public works maintenance crew; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must hold or have held a Senior Operator position with West Valley City or an equivalent position within another organization.
Language Skills
- High school equivalent English writing and speaking skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with employees and citizens.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must have a valid Utah Class A Commercial Driver’s License, without an air brake restriction.
- Must have a certification in work zone/flagging safety.
- Relevant certifications from professional organizations.

- Ability to perform heavy, physical labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions.
