Description
Under supervision of the Transportation Maintenance Supervisor, performs various technical duties pertaining to the maintenance and construction of City traffic control devices.
Starting Pay
Additional pay may be provided depending on experience.
Transportation Technician I: $21.64
Transportation Technician II: $23.40

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, install, and repair traffic control devices within the public right-of-way.
- Resolve problems with visibility of traffic control devices.
- Set up MUTCD compliant work zones traffic control devices.
- Install pavement markings, including crosswalks, stop bars and legends, layout of long lines prior to striping.
- Participate in snow plow operations as assigned.
- Program and install traffic counters throughout the city.
- Assist the Street Light Utility crew as assigned.
In addition, Technician II will:
- Respond to after hours and weekend emergency call-outs as assigned.
- Program and setup traffic counters and download data for analysis.
- Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of City owned signs and other traffic control devices in the GIS database.
- Fill out work orders and reports in the asset management software.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: May be assigned to manage seasonal or part-time staff.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of generally accepted practices, procedures, equipment and materials used in the installation of traffic control devices.
- Ability to work and relate well with co-workers, supervisors and the general public under varying circumstances.
In addition, Technician II has:
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance required for the tools and equipment which will be operated and the ability to detect the need for and make minor repairs or adjustments on tools and equipment
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
In addition, Technician II has:
- Two years related experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Utah driver’s license required, Class A CDL preferred.
- Flagger certification within 6 months of hire.
In addition, Technician II has:
- Valid Utah Class A CDL required.
- Flagger certification required.
- Traffic Control Technician certification within 6 months of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Moderate to heavy physical activity.
- Must be able to lift items that may weigh up to 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Moderate mental effort is required daily with frequent exposure to stress from deadlines and working with other departments.
- Regular exposure to cold, heat, dust, fumes, noise and traffic hazards.
- Some seasonal overtime and/or weekend work is required.
