LOCATION: West Valley School District Central Office
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Finance
SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - $90,000
Work Calendar: 8 hours a day/5 days a week/260 days a year
PURPOSE:
The Lead Accountant is responsible for supporting the Director of Finance in managing all fiscal and fiduciary duties for the school district. Primary responsibilities for this role include assisting with budget preparation, grant management, monthly and year-end financial reporting, and providing support and backup for department staff.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting preferred.
- A minimum of two years accounting experience.
- Grant experience preferred.
- Good with basic computer software.
- Experience in Excel is required.
- Work well under pressure and adjust schedule to meet state deadlines as needed.
- Must have good communication skills, be able to work with others, and be flexible and open to new ideas and change.
- Assist the Director of Finance with all financial matters, accounting activity, budget and other miscellaneous responsibilities in the department.
- This role will be cross-trained and provide back-up support to all department staff.
- Continue education of accounting practices. i.e., OSPI Accounting Manual, WASBO Conferences, Certification Program, etc.
- Assist in all month-end processing for all funds such as journal entries, bank reconciliations, and balance all funds to the Yakima County Treasurer reports.
- Prepare monthly grant claims and ensure proper coding and recording of revenue and expenditures. Monitor expenditures to avoid cost in excess of grant award less indirect allowances and assist with annual SEFA report.
- Assist in development of year-end financial statement and filing of F-196.
- Assist in preparation of school district annual budgets for all funds and filing of F-195.
- Assist in preparation of the annual financial notes.
- Assist in calculating the annual special education excess cost.
- Assist in preparing the annual Unclaimed Property report.
- Assist in providing financial software support.
- Provide training and support to building staff and secretaries to ensure compliance with accounting requirements.

Working Relationships:
Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with patrons and district staff. Team up with department colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the department administrator evaluation process. When working with district staff or patrons, provide appropriate and accurate information.
Working Conditions:
The daily work is performed in an office setting. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; required to work in routine positions for extended periods.
Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
