Literacy Pirates Camp K-5 - July 27-31, 2025

POSITION TYPE : Service

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT : The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION : Romney, West Virginia

To serve as an instructional aide to deaf and hard-of-hearing or blind low vision students enrolled in the Literacy Pirates Camp ; to assist the teachers in the delivery of instruction during the summer enrichment program at the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

Pursuant to WV State Board of Education Policy 4336)

  • Serve as an instructional aide to elementary and secondary age deaf and hard-of-hearing and / or blind / low vision participants.
  • Assist WVSDB summer camp participants in completing projects and assignments related to the summer camp theme.
  • Assist teachers in preparing materials and activities for use in the summer camp.
  • Assist with extra-curricular activities as needed, e.g., educational field trips, summer camp projects.
  • Interpret as necessary, if assigned to deaf / hard of hearing students.
  • Provide supervision as necessary during non-instructional time, e.g., recreational time and lunch duties.
  • Must follow all applicable WVSDB and WVBE policies, rules and regulations, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of the summer camp participants assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s).
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Experience as a classroom instructional aide at the elementary and / or secondary school level required.
  • Experience working with elementary and / or secondary school age deaf and hard-of-hearing or blind / low vision students required.
  • Must be able to communicate in sign language with deaf and hard-of-hearing students and adults, as assignment requires.
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and / or move 50-100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The employee may frequently lift and / or move at least 50-100 pounds. He / she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

  • The staff member must meet ASL and / or Braille skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification.
  • The staff member must complete all required trainings.
  • The staff member works effectively as a member of the educational team.
  • The staff member demonstrates self-control and exhibits an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance.
  • The staff member demonstrates ethical conduct and good work habits such as punctuality and attendance.
  • The staff member demonstrates self-direction and the ability to use software applications for work productivity and collaboration.
  • The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks / assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines.
  • The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
  • The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.
  • SALARY :

    Hourly rate of pay is calculated pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with WVSDB Service Personnel Pay Schedule, B, C or D Scale, commensurate with experience and education level.

    Hours of work will be scheduled as needed by the immediate supervisor during the camp. Five days during the camp and one prep day may be scheduled. Workdays may exceed 7.5 hours for scheduled trips. Maximum billable hours for this contract = 52.5.

    JOB CONTINGENCIES :

    Employment is dependent and contingent upon the number of attendees enrolled in the summer camp. Must be available to work every day of the camp as listed in the posting.

    EVALUATION :

    Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
