    TITLE OF VACANCY: Residential Program Interpreter I, II – 200 days

    POSITION TYPE: Professional

    ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

    LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

    Responsible for American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and/or reverse interpreting services for Deaf and hearing consumers within the WVSDB residential program environment. The interpreter will facilitate communication through use of sign language, spoken English, cultural mediation, and knowledge about visual accessibility. Knows and actively practices the Interpreter Code of Ethics. This position provides interpreter services in a variety of settings, including but not limited to, parent meetings, staff meetings, administrative meetings, or other events as scheduled by the supervisor.

    Also, responsible to provide ASL technical assistance, via informal workshops for families, and staff. Assists with implementation and management of WVSDB’s ASL Professional Development Plan for residential direct student services staff and the ASL related sections of the Communication Policy.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - “Employee Code of Conduct” and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
    • Performs advanced levels of interpreting.
    • Maintains interpreter certification and stays well-informed of current standards of practice related to sign language interpreters.
    • Provides and/coordinates ASL professional development and workshops for WVSDB stakeholder groups as assigned.
    • Assists with facilitating the overall mission of the WVSDB Communication Policy.
    • Maintains positive and professional relationships with all WVSDB stakeholders and communicates in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner with all students, staff or visitors.
    • Complies with all federal and state laws and regulations, applicable WVBE/WVSDB policies and procedures in carrying out duties of position.
    Interpreting responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
    • Make available sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting for WVSDB residential program staff/students, as necessary during afternoon/evening hours and on weekends when scheduled.
    • Interprets for instructional program staff, if services are requested by immediate supervisor.
    • May be assigned to interprets for teachers and students needing ASL support while administering statewide assessments (Academic and CTE)
    • Interprets for off-campus educational opportunities if staff skill level necessitates
    • Responsible for interpreting during various residential program functions, including but not limited to:
      • interviews for job applicants
      • employee trainings
      • employee disciplinary matters
    • Provides interpreting for student/staff during serious medical situations on campus and occasionally at a regional medical facility.
    • Reverse (sign to voice) interpreting may be needed for any of the above listed items for new and existing staff and administrators with limited signing skills.
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Associate’s degree required; BA/BS degree in Interpreting preferred
    • Must have a minimum of a 3.0-3.4 EIPA score, ASLPI 2 , VQAS Level II, NAD III* or Intermediate SLPI to be considered for hire – classified as Professional Interpreter I.
    • EIPA 3.5 or higher, ASLPI 3 or higher, VQAS Level III or higher, NAD IV* or higher, RID: National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or Advanced to Superior level SLPI:ASL scores preferred – classified as Professional Interpreter II.
      • Applicants that are NAD credentialed interpreters must have had an active certification and registered with RID prior to June 30, 2005. These interpreters are required to comply with all aspects of RID’s Certification Maintenance Program, including the completion of professional development.
  • WVSDB will cover the cost of an interpreter certification exam once within three years after date of hire.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c
  • Must be able to meet physical demands of signing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which effect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

  • The staff member must meet ASL skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification and assigned department.
  • The staff member must complete all required annual trainings.
  • The staff member works effectively as a member of the educational team.
  • The staff member demonstrates self-control and exhibits an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance.
  • The staff member demonstrates ethical conduct and good work habits such as punctuality and attendance.
  • The staff member demonstrates self-direction and the ability to use software applications for work productivity and collaboration.
  • The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines.
  • The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
  • Be available with little to no notice to interpret/reverse interpret during assigned work hours.
  • Additional training(s) may be required to perform evaluative assessments of ASL skill levels for WVSDB stakeholders and/or other outside agencies (i.e. NTID SLPI:ASL).
  • The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.

COMPENSATION:
Pursuant to W. Va. Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with WVSDB Professional Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level, 200-day annual contract, plus applicable related service provider Supplemental Pay
for interpreters (Level I or Level II). Additional compensation available for ASL proficiency demonstrated as detailed in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification.
