The Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector 4 will report to the District Headquarters, Bridge Department. Performs advanced level bridge safety inspection and analysis work and supervises the performance of a bridge safety inspection team. May perform strenuous physical labor. Hazardous working conditions involve climbing on the superstructure and substructure of bridges. The work may involve exposure to severe weather conditions. Performs related work as required.Pay Grade 17

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION Certification as a Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector 4 by the West Virginia Department of Transportation.REQUIRED EXPERIENCENo experience is required.REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW HIRES (ONLY) : Option 1 Traditional: Documented (8) eight years of Board approved technical experience and obtained 900 TDH’s from the AAS Highway Engineering Technology – Bridge Inspection Concentration degree requirements.OROption 2 Pre-Approved BS or AS degree: Documented (8) eight years of Board approved technical progressive experience after obtaining a Board approved bachelor’s degree or associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, or similar technical degree from an accredited college or university.OROption 3 BSCE or BSCET degree with FE: Documented (5) five years of Board approved technical progressive experience after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.OROption 4 BSCE, BSCET, ASCE or ASCET degree: Documented (7) seven years of Board approved technical experience after obtaining a bachelor’s degree or associate degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university.OR Option 5 Existing Bridge Safety Inspector 3: Obtain 90 TDH’s per year from the AAS Highway Engineering – Bridge Inspection Concentration degree requirements until 8 years of documented Board approved technical experience as a bridge inspector has been met.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Plans and schedules the work of bridge safety inspection teams within the district.• Supervises the work performed through the bridge safety inspection team supervisors.• Reviews and edits draft inspection reports completed by inspectors for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to established guidelines.• Performs preliminary technical analysis such as stress analysis.• Reviews the quality of completed inspection work by comparing reported data with actual structural condition.• Writes periodic progress reports on the bridge safety inspection program within a district as required.• Works as an inspection team member or inspection team supervisor in the absence of other inspectors or supervisors.• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
