Nature of Work
This position is responsible for learning about the overall administration, operations, maintenance and protection of a West Virginia State Park. The part-time seasonal employee in this position will receive related on the job training to enable them to perform various management duties and responsibilities at a State Park while under the direct supervision of experienced park superintendent. .
Under close supervision of the park superintendent or assistant superintendent, a supervisory “seasonal part-time park ranger in training” is an opportunity to participate in the management, maintenance, and protection of state-owned parks, forests or rail trails. These positions shall serve in a capacity of a supervisory trainee which may place operational emphasis on certain park related functions including operations, recreation, lodging and hospitality, safety and security, or maintenance and grounds.
The seasonal part-time (40) hour per week park ranger in training shall be expected to participate in opportunities that will teach moderate discretionary judgment and initiative in the planning, directing and oversight of facility programs in the areas of state park operations that may include: building, equipment and grounds maintenance; housekeeping; sanitation; public relations; hospitality; public safety; visitor activity; programming; historical and nature interpretation; conservation; preservation; public work program; federal and state regulatory compliance; accounting; recordkeeping; revenue production; budget preparation and control; and concession oversight. These positions may be assigned a primary duty at the work location which focuses on one or more of the programs listed above.
These positions are primarily intended as trainees to obtain necessary experience to become qualified or eligible for the Superintendent series positions. Duties may include research projects, special events, security patrol and firefighting. These positions are subject to on-call status, may supervise, and perform related work as required.
Special Requirement: Applicants should be actively pursuing formal education in a professional field with preference to those pursuing 4-year, bachelor degrees in the fields of business management, public administration, education, marketing, agriculture, forestry, criminal justice, military service, recreation, tourism, and park management or relevant fields.
Requirement: Must have a valid driver’s license.
