Nature of Work
The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) Co-Op Program is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience for college students. This program will immerse the students in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity that are structured to provide the student the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform at a professional level within the WVDOT.
Work assignments provide experience in various aspects such as :
- Engineering Design, Bridge, Maintenance, Construction, Traffic, Materials, etc.
- Administrative Finance, Auditing, Budget, Accounting, Human Resources, etc.
- Information Technology PC Programming, Geographic Information Systems, Engineering and Specialty Systems, etc.
- Environmental Resources Construction Inspection, Storm Water, FEMA, Asbestos, Underground Storage Tanks, Building Inspection, etc.
Typical engineering assignments include inspecting work in progress at construction sites, calculating quantities of materials, reviewing and analyzing data and participating in field reviews. College graduates with WVDOH co-op experience find they are well prepared for responsible entry-level engineering positions.
Typical accounting assignments may include complex posting, encumbering of funds, examining records, making journal entries, and preparing audit narrative reports.
Engineering and Specialty Systems involving support, design, training, implementation and maintenance of Engineering and related applications.
Typical Environmental Program assignments may include Construction Inspection, Storm Water, Asbestos, Building Inspection, FEMA,GIS, and Underground Storage Tanks.
As a co-op employee you will be a temporary full-time employee and as such will not be eligible for retirement benefits, insurance, sick or annual leave, extended leave benefits, cost of living raises, etc. Co-ops can only be employed for a maximum 1000 hours within a 12 month period.

Requirements :
Engineering student applicants must have completed at least one year of a four year Engineering BS program, a two or four-year BSCET program, administrative program, information technology program, or environmental resources program. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to participate and be enrolled full time (12 semester hours) the semester preceding and succeeding the period for which they are applying.
The employment you are accepting is in a temporary position not a covered civil service position under the classification and compensation system administered by the West Virginia Department of Transportation. This position has the following restrictions :
1. It is temporary employment. The maximum period of employment is 1,000 hours in a 12-month period. However, there is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours under this temporary appointment.
2. You will not accrue sick leave.
3. You will not accrue annual leave.
4. You will not be paid for holidays or other time off due to inclement weather, office closures, etc.
5. This time will not count as tenure or service time for any purpose.
6. You will not be eligible to participate in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
7. You do not have the right of appeal before the State Personnel Board or Public Employees Grievance Board.
8. This time cannot be counted towards completion of a probationary period if subsequently hired for permanent employment.
9. In order to be appointed to a position covered by the State civil service system, it will be necessary for you to be selected from a list of applicants certified from a competitive register unless you have previously been certified permanent under the State civil service system and are eligible for reinstatement.
10. Your temporary employment may be ended at any time with or without cause.
