Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 2 Mechanic will be assigned to the District Equipment Shop but will physically report to the Jackson County Maintenance Headquarters. Under general supervision, performs full level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment in need of repair. Will perform minor overhaul of gasoline or diesel-powered equipment engines. Performs vehicle diagnostics and troubleshooting for repairs. This would include but not be limited to the replacement of motors, belts, seals, bearings, blades, brakes, tires, making minor mechanical repairs, and routine services in both the field and at the garage. With appropriate certifications and licenses, drives equipment after repairs to test operations. Responsible for inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Will assist higher level mechanics in advanced equipment repairs. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and / or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

REQUIRED TRAINING / EDUCATION : No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE : Mechanic : Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.
Mechanic Experience Substitution : Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
