Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator is assigned to the District Heavy Maintenance Headquarters, Disforce Crew and will report to work in Greenbrier, Summers and Monroe Counties. Under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and / or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). However, a Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief is excluded and the applicant will not be placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program.

REQUIRED TRAINING / EDUCATION : No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE : Equipment Operator : Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
Equipment Operator Experience Substitutions : Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
