The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources is currently accepting applications for an Academic Advisor.

About the Opportunity

As an Academic Advisor, you will provide guidance to students within the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. You will be responsible for ensuring that students are equipped with the essential information to matriculate through the higher education system and within the college. You'll aid in the total development of students by providing them guidance in developing social, educational, and career goals, creating meaningful objectives, and selecting appropriate academic majors. Additional duties include teaching a University 101 class and participating in initiatives designed to improve student retention. The position may require evening and weekend work. This role reports to the Director of the Statler College Advising Center.

What You'll Do

  • Provide timely, appropriate and accurate information on majors, admissions requirements, career information, resources and follow-up.
  • Meet with students individually or in group sessions to assist them in assessing educational goals, identifying majors, developing matriculation plans and selecting appropriate coursework.
  • Evaluate student records to measure academic progress and identify any program deficiencies.
  • Calculate grade point averages and deficiency points.
  • Present students with alternative academic programs as appropriate and warranted.
  • Assist students in analyzing and identifying solutions to academic problems.
  • Develop, host and present academic information workshops.
  • Teach University 101 and equivalents.
  • May be responsible for the design and implementation of a specific, designated programming area.
  • Interpret the University catalog for the purposes of advising.
  • Follow University policies and procedures on file reviews, documentation, confidentiality, data management and e-advising.
  • Advise students on academic probation.
  • Provide advising services to students with special needs, e.g., academically at-risk students, students with disabilities, transient students.
  • Participate in advising programs.
  • Use web services and software programs such as, BANNER, GroupWise, Microsoft Office, world-wide web, email, AdvisorTrac.
  • Participate in evening advising events.
  • Respond to student inquiries and communications via email, phone, and / or letters in regard to admissions criteria, application procedures, and general questions / needs for information.
  • Review and maintain students' academic files, ensuring strict security and confidentiality of student information.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or as directed.
  • Pay Grade : 15

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of directly related experience involving :
  • Advising or counseling

  • Academic or student support services
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and / or experience will be considered.
  • All requirements must be met by the time of employment.

  • Knowledge of workshop, seminar and conference design.
  • Knowledge of various college and school curricula and admission requirements.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures and established rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work with an academically and culturally diverse group of students.
  • Ability to use computer software for communication and organization.
  • Ability to understand and resolve issues that arise with students concerning the areas of academics, person, social and career development.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and with students on a group and individual basis.
  • Ability to evaluate high school and college transcripts based on established eligibility and major degree requirements.
  • Ability to accurately plan program of study and advise students on progress towards their degree.
  • Ability to teach U101 classes or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and apply systems theory in relation to higher education.
