The West Virginia University Institute of Technology at Beckley (WVU Tech), a divisional four-year campus of West Virginia University (WVU), is currently seeking applications for the following employment opportunity :

The Department of Civil Engineering within the Leonard C. Nelson School of Engineering seeks to hire an Assistant / Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. The nine-month contract position is full-time, tenure-track, and benefits-eligible.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach basic engineering mechanics courses as well as a variety of civil engineering courses such as Construction Materials, Soil Mechanics and upper-level elective geotechnical engineering courses. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue scholarly activities which may include research opportunities with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, or similar funding agencies. Other auxiliary duties include those normally associated with a faculty position in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program.

Anticipated Start Date : August 15, 2025 or until the position is filled.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with an emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering is required.
  • An All But Dissertation (ABD) candidate will be considered, with the expectation that doctorate degree will be awarded within the first semester of employment (January 2026).
  • Commitment to teaching excellence, responsiveness to student needs, and good communication skills are essential.
  • Interest in scholarship / research, service to the university and the profession, and developing relationships with the consulting industry and public entities such as the West Virginia Department of Highways are also essential.
  • To be considered at the Associate Professor rank, applicants must have a minimum of five years of higher education teaching experience.
