The Department of Biology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Temporary Research Assistant.
About the Opportunity
This position assists the Morrissey Lab in data collection and analysis, and laboratory management for research related to soil carbon cycling and plant microbe interactions. This position will work on multiple federally funded research projects using molecular microbiology and environmental science techniques to understand connections between microbes, plants, and soil carbon cycling in natural and human-impacted ecosystems.
What You'll Do
- Perform microbial and biogeochemical analyses on root and soil samples.
- Basic lab upkeep tasks such as washing dishes and preparing solutions.
- Perform field work including collecting soil and plant samples from research plots.
Length of Assignment: Approximately 8 Months
- Associate degree in environmental or biological science or related field.
- 0-6 months of experience in microbiology, ecology, and biogeochemistry.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to effectively use Excel etc.
- Knowledge of environmental science.
- Must be proficient in pipetting and making solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to perform genetic laboratory techniques, such as DNA extraction and PCR.
Physical Demands & Physical Coordination
- Must be able to work at a lab bench for several hours per day.
