About The Opportunity

This position provides the necessary maintenance and supervision of Trades Specialist(s) II and Trade Helpers while overseeing the repairs, trouble shooting, and installation of plumbing, HVAC and electrical equipment and controls , ability to operate building automation through Siemens Apogee/ Desigo along with and preventative and general maintenance for athletic facilities and areas including the Milan Puskar Center, North End Zone Suite/Club, Press Box and Press Box Suites , Coliseum complex and all other Athletic facilities.

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain and install building automation control systems using Siemens pneumatic and electric controls. Ability to operate and control building automation through Siemens Apogee/ Desigo
  • Direct, in the absence of the immediate supervisor, responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of buildings and equipment in the following facilities: Milan Puskar Center, North End Zone Suite/Club, Press Box and Press Box Suites, at Milan Puskar Stadium, Coliseum Complex, Basketball Practice Facility, Wrestling Pavilion, Dick Dleck Soccer Stadium and any other athletic facilities including all HVAC systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and kitchen areas.
  • Manage various long term vendor contracts (i.e., Siemens, Trane, etc.) and coordinate and oversee all work performed by such vendors and contractors.
  • Receive work orders and interfaces with Athletic Facilities office, Maintenance Supervisor and/or Sr. Manager, to review and completed project scopes. Assist Managers and Associate Athletic Director with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicate work schedules to trade workers, helpers creating efficiency and timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Provide continual inspection of assigned areas to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule; recommend major repair needs; assist in developing and updating deferred maintenance.
  • Work with Physical Plant Trades Specials II and outside contractors as needed on various upgrades and major repairs.
  • Read and review blueprints, O&M manuals for new and existing building projects for repair; develop as¬ built sketches of completed in-house projects with auto cad.
  • Maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction; attend project meetings in the absence of the supervisor and interact with contractors, vendors and engineers as needed.
  • Determine and recommend the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork, safety checks to maintain proper work and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
  • Provide daily or weekly reports as needed or required for progress on projects (repair or new work). Maintains the original scope of the project to ensure project cost controls, weekly reports and invoices necessary to complete assignments. Respond when called during off hours to cover emergency situations.
  • Provide direction and assistance to Physical Plant Trades Specialist and contracted service providers on game days for Football, Men's & Women’s Basketball and any other sports or events as needed .
  • Operate computers utilizing software programs for Siemens Apogee along with others, such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, etc.
  • Supervise Trades Specialist(s) II including hiring, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions and writing job descriptions. Approve leave and sick time. Report discipline and performance problems. Assist in disciplinary action.
  • Develop requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. form vendors and ensures timely delivery.
  • Interpret blueprints and specifications; shall procure parts and materials and supplies for projects and repairs as assigned; responsible for tools and equipment used in the performance of job related duties. Shall leave work areas in a neat and orderly manner. Job duties are not to be considered as specific as to exclude any work which may cross tasks or other assigned duties.
  • Install, maintain and repair water filters, ice machines, and dish machines, water treatment systems for cooling and heating water, training room equipment, and swim-X equipment, whirlpools.
  • Troubleshoot, install, maintain and repair chilled water and heating water distribution systems along with all associated valves, tanks, air bleeders, and coils. Arrange for major overhauls using contracted vendor and supervises work of contracted labor to complete major overhauls or replacements.
  • Operate test equipment for piping systems, steam traps, heat exchangers and valves. Operate hand tools and power equipment such as drain snake, drill press, pipe threading machine, pipe cutters, power saw, brazing equipment, air compressor, and various other hand tools.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair refrigeration and chiller systems such as screw chillers, centrifugal chillers. Arrange for major overhauls using contracted labor and supervises work of contracted labor to complete major overhauls or replacements.
  • Operate test equipment for proper diagnosis of failed mechanical systems. Test equipment shall include refrigerant gauges, voltmeter, electric meter, amp probe, acid test, and vacuum meter. Will have ability to solder and braze refrigerant piping and components utilizing proper torch and material.
  • Possess knowledge of refrigerant and reclaiming equipment. Maintain knowledge of regulations that apply to such equipment. The use of this equipment is governed by specific EPA regulations and requires a license. Possess and maintain license to reclaim refrigerant.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair ice machines, freezers, dish machines, walk-in coolers, steam kettles, fryers, exhaust hoods and other related kitchen equipment. Arrange for major replacements / replacements using contracted labor. Arrange for replacement parts as needed to complete repairs.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair pneumatic and electrical controls for building HVAC systems. Operate computerized controls for building HVAC systems. Arrange for contracted overhauls and major repairs of these systems as required. Supervise all contracted repairs.
  • Install, inspects, replaces wire, auxiliary equipment such as fuses, insulators, and switches to ascertain capacities and working conditions, utilizing thorough knowledge of types, sizes and styles of equipment.
  • Install and maintains all control systems for motors, lights, heat, and air controls. Arrange for contract vendor for major repair/replacement of such systems. Supervise work of contracted vendor.
  • Operate scissor lift, bucket truck, hydraulic lift to maintain and troubleshoot fixtures and devices.
  • General upkeep of mechanical rooms in all Athletic Facilities. Use of shop vac to keep equipment dust free and in good working order.
  • Change filters & belts, oil and grease equipment, maintain a maintenance log of all preventative maintenance for mechanical equipment as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor and Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations.
  • Assist in the setup and operation of all sporting events, including those outside normal work hours.
  • Manage and oversee all pools and pool equipment that are associated with the athletic department.
  • Responsible for maintenance contracts for Athletic facilities that pertain to HVAC systems and equipment; coordinates with vendors to schedule work and processes purchase order once work has been completed to desired specifications.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA; must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11.1 Conduct of Athletic Personnel. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial, ethnical and sexual orientation differences.

  • Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions. Failure to use proper discretion at required level could result in major and significant embarrassment to the University and/or have a significant impact on image, revenues and eligibility of student-athletes.
  • Manage professional and personal time to be handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work, and on-call availability.
  • Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as requested or assigned by Supervisor and/or Associate Athletic Director for Facilities/Operations

Pay Grade: 15

Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program.

    • Must have one of the following:
    • 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
    • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.
One (1) Year Experience Leading And/or Training Others.

  • Highschool diploma or GED
  • Completion of vocational/ technical training program in HVAC or electrical field of up to 18 months beyond high school or equivalent.
  • Siemens automated controls training required including courses toward Siemens building master certification.
  • A minimum of two (2) years related experience in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, and mechanical maintenance
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Siemens Apogee & Desigo controls and Graphics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of absorption machines, screw chillers, centrifugal chillers, and all other HVAC systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technical terms related to plumbing equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reclaiming and recovery of refrigerants and regulations that apply.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of HVAC control systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all materials, methods, tools, equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions in the electrical field.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local, state and federal electrical codes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local, state and federal building codes.
  • Demonstrate ability to read blueprints.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pool systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 year associate degree in engineering technology or 2 year trade school diploma of course completion beyond high school relating to two or more of the following fields; electrical, plumbing, building maintenance , HVAC, welding , mechanics

Requirements

  • Must have one of the following:
  • 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
  • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.

Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program.

One (1) Year Experience Leading And/or Training Others.

  • Highschool diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver's License. - operate department vehicles .
  • WVU Medical Monitoring Program (Participation to satisfy the capability to wear respiratory protection (respirator)
  • WV State Welding certification license 6 G
  • Universal Refrigeration License- EPA requires this for working on Freon containing equipment.
  • Federal required PA.
