In a training capacity, acquires the ability to perform protective services work in fire investigations/fire safety inspections, for a time period to be specified by the State Fire Marshal. The employee will learn proper methods of fire investigation/inspection through classroom and self-study and by assisting with fire investigations and inspections in the field. May assist with fire safety inspections or schools, public and private health care facilities, and correctional facilities. With direction, employee will work with businesses for compliance with fire safety codes and assist with follow-up inspections. Will learn to determine adequacy of hallways, stairways, and doors to allow safe exit from the building. May assist in fire arson/explosives investigations. The employee will work within an assigned geographic region of the State. Travel is required. Will work in potentially hazardous conditions during fire safety inspections and arson/explosives investigations. Will perform related work as needed.

Training: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
OR
Substitution: High school diploma or the equivalent and four (4) years of full-time or part-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience in law enforcement, fire prevention, fire safety, building inspection or safety related fields.
OR
Any combination of experience as described above and successful completion of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university may substitute for the above training at a rate of one (1) year for every thirty (30) semester hours.
AND
Special Requirement: All new hires after July 1, 2020 shall comply with the law enforcement certification requirements set forth in West Virginia Code §30-29-1 et seq. New hires without certification must complete training to acquire the required law enforcement certification in compliance with the aforementioned West Virginia Code.

- Applicants must successfully complete a physical performance test prior to appointment and as required thereafter.
- Applicants must successfully complete a chemical urinalysis drug-screening test prior to initial employment.
- All employees in this job class shall be subject to random drug testing, as well as drug testing for reasonable suspicion as set forth in agency policy.
- Applicant's character and suitability for employment as an Assistant Fire Marshal must be verified through an agency investigation prior to employment.
- Applicant's background must be clear of felony convictions.
- Applicants are subject to recurring background checks as may be required by law, rule, standard, or policy.
- Applicants will be required to work various shifts and it is understood schedules are subject to change at any time.
- Applicants are subject to mandatory overtime requirements and must be available for assignment to any location in the State of West Virginia.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment and continuously maintain such license while employed in this classification.
- Applicants must maintain a working telephone in order for the agency to contact them.
- Applicants shall successfully complete training as may be required by policies established by the State Fire Marshal, or as may be required by law, rule, or standard.
- Applicants must possess the ability to perform the essential functions and tasks of the classification.
