Job Goal: The Social Studies Teacher fosters a love of learning that encourages student curiosity, engagement, and growth in a welcoming community of learners. The Middle School Social Studies curriculum focuses on Ancient Civilizationsin 7th grade and in 8th grade Civics and follows the DESE grade-level curriculum standards, utilizing a variety of resources as instructional material.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in a related field
- Professional Certification Required:
- MA DESE license in 5-8 Social Studies
- SEI Endorsement
- Additional certification in special education and/or ESL highly desirable

Specialized Knowledge: adolescent development, curriculum frameworks, growth mindset, inclusive practices, cultural proficiency, anti-bias instruction, co-teaching, social-emotional learning, technology integration
- CORI and Fingerprinting: All appointments are conditional based on a satisfactory CORI and SAFIS Background Check per 603 CMR 51.00.
- Preferred Experience:
- Experience teaching English Language Learniers in a diverse public school setting
- Experience teaching students with special needs, including students with emotional, behavioral, and/or learning challenges
- Strong background in Social Studies instruction
- Demonstrated skills in effectively integrating technology into lesson design, e.g. Google Suite for Education, Peardeck, kahoot, CoSpaces etc.
- Highly desirable to have experience with:
- Co-Teaching
- Project-Based Learning
- Technology Integration

- Plan and implement differentiated lessons and ongoing formative assessment based on district objectives and the abilities, needs, and interests of students

CENTRAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):
- Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment embracing diversity and ensuring equitable opportunities for student learning and community membership
- Provide learning experiences across all subject areas as guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements
- Monitor students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusts as necessary
- Evaluate and refine instructional practice and assessment strategies to increase student learning, engagement, and confidence in learning
- Participate in professional development activities, internal and external, that meet district expectations and the requirements for licensure recertification
- Participate in all faculty and committee meetings as required, and district-wide committees as needed;
- Any other relative duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Social Studies Teacher does not have supervisory responsibilities for other staff, except to direct any paraeducators who may be assigned to his/her/their classroom.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary, benefits, and responsibilities per contract between the Westborough School Committee and the Westborough Education Association.
