What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Westchester Medical Center?
The Phlebotomist collects blood and other patient samples from inpatient and outpatient client population. Provides the essential direct link between the patient and testing service both interpersonal contact and technical competence in obtaining appropriate patient samples.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects blood samples from neonates to the geriatric patients via venipuncture or capillary methods.
- Informs the patient or consenting adult of the anticipated procedure.
- Identifies indications for specific size of venipuncture needle/collection device.
- Identifies blood collection tubes for blood collection.
- Identifies contraindications for specific extremity, or area of venipuncture.
- Performs venipuncture with tape and dry dressing.
- Administers Glucola and appropriately times draws for tolerance tests.
- Obtains medical necessity supporting information as needed.
- Performs collection of some non-blood specimens such as throat cultures, when necessary.
- Provides patients with instructions and containers for collection of specimens to be collected by the patient.
- Verifies that specimens are collected for all tests ordered.
- Properly identifies all patients before obtaining any specimen.
- Assess work priority to assure collection of STAT and timed specimens within the time standards set by Laboratory Policy.
- Labels and accessions all specimens according to standards set by laboratory policy.
- Maintains verbal standing order systems.
- Distributes all collected specimens to the designated area for specimen processing or testing.
- Distributes laboratory reports meeting established guidelines.
- Accurately and efficiently enters patients into the LIS.
- Identifies patient’s pain and reports excessive pain to ordering clinician.
- Observes for possible elder abuse and reports to ordering clinician.
- Provides phlebotomy to patients in restraints with the assistance of nurse, physician assistant or MD.
- Responsible got assuring orders are collected and received properly in LIS.
- Generates requested reports via fax and distributes other reports no faxed as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE
- Data entry or typing skills preferred.
EDUCATION
- High School diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma including ability to read, write and comprehend Medical Terminology is required.
