Job Summary: The custodian position is designed to clean the buildings of Westerly Public Schools and ensure a result that will provide a safe, attractive, and clean environment for students, staff and citizens to use each day.
Responsibilities:

Keeps the building clean and sanitary at all times.

Cleans classrooms, corridors, stairwells, restroom facilities in a location within Westerly Public Schools as assigned including:

School buildings and grounds using:
-
mops, floor cleaning machines, brooms, buckets, etc. to dust, scrub, wax and otherwise cleans floors, walls, furniture, ledges, windows and other physical properties as designated and applicable.

May be required to perform the following tasks;

Collect and dispose of rubbish, shovel snow, clean walks and grounds, move furniture, replace light bulbs, clean sewer lines, may sand and finish floors, may spot-patch walls and woodwork.

May paint as required and set up furniture for activities.

.May perform minor preventive maintenance inside and outside the building as directed.

Secures building each evening if a second shift employee or according to summer/break schedules.

May be required to deliver a wide array of goods and materials within and outside of the district including but not limited to furniture, cleaning equipment, paper supplies, discarded items, etc.

Complete all other tasks assigned by Director of Facilities, Superintendent of Schools, Building Principal and as authorized by Director of Facilities or Boilerman/Lead.

This position works Sunday to Thursday during basketball season.

Can be asked to open/work at other schools during this shift.
Qualifications:
-
Experience:
-
Minimum of 2-years’ experience in a custodial capacity in the private or public sector or successful experience as a maintenance worker in a school system
-
Possesses ability to speak and understand English, basic reading comprehension, math, problem-solving/trouble-shooting, and verbal communication skills as determined by standard assessments.

Must have familiarity with computer technology in order to be able to read and send email and, when necessary, complete online professional development.

Education:

High School Degree or equivalent.

Certification:

Possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:
-
Demonstrates proficiency in lifting and carrying, up to seventy five (75) pounds.

Demonstrates manual dexterity.
-
Capable of bending and stooping, reaching above shoulder level and climbing and descending stairs and ladders.

Possesses sufficient strength and health to perform moderately heavy, manual labor.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must provide a current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
