What are the responsibilities and job description for the Flex Crew position at Western Carolina University?
The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.
The position’s tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: performing physically demanding work including moving of heavy equipment, furniture, and materials; perform pressure washing, assist the recycling program, conduct setups for special events, respond to emergency calls as needed, operation of tools, equipment, and machinery utilized by the various trades shops, and other duties including repairing and assisting with various renovation projects and events that may be assigned. Normal working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Schedule adjustments, weekend and holiday work, responding to after hours and weekend emergencies as needed.
Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
The successful position holder must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Be in good physical condition, capable of performing manual labor tasks in a variety of situations and conditions; have a general knowledge of the plumbing, electric, carpentry, and automotive related trades; possess a demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and departments; must be able to follow both oral and written instructions, and be able to perform medium-to-heavy physical work; be able to safely and effectively move and operate commercial pressure washers, etc.; be capable of safely climbing ladders, including 6ft and 12ft ladders, working from a lift or bucket truck or other elevated platforms, and be able to work on roofs at heights of approximately 100 ft.; must be able to move, transport, load, and unload heavy furniture, equipment, and materials; must possess the ability to perform medium to heavy physically demanding work, freely lift a minimum of 75 pounds, and be able to stand for long periods of time while working. Position requires close attention to detail and the ability to focus, recognize, anticipate, and correct problems; requires alertness to safety and security conditions. Work duties may or may not be in an environment with heating or air conditioning; exposure to outside elements is necessary when moving, setting-up special events, or handling deliveries, etc. Must have reliable transportation and be able to safely report to work during a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow, and/or ice. Must be able to communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, and the general public. Must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with others in order to encourage and support communication, teamwork, and facilitate work completion. Must be able to comprehend, follow, and carry-out both verbal and written work assignment instructions, as well as all other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. Must be able to work independently or on a team, and deal effectively with various groups, clients or individuals being served. Ability to perform computer functions including sending and receiving emails and completing an online timesheet. Candidate must have a valid NC Driver’s License.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
