Join Our Team as a Seasonal Heavy Equipment Operator!

Western Construction in Rapid City, SD is currently seeking experienced and skilled Heavy Equipment Operators to join our team for the upcoming season. As a Heavy Equipment Operator at Western Construction, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. Your role as a Heavy Equipment Operator will be crucial to the success of our projects, as you will be responsible for operating and maintaining heavy machinery to ensure efficiency and safety on the job site. The typical work season is mid-April - December.

Responsibilities :

Operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders, and graders.
Perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.
Collaborate with other team members to complete projects on time and within budget.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and project managers to update on progress.
Take personal responsibility to ensure that utility locates are obtained and work is performed safely, conscious of the utilities around.
Monitor overhead utilities and other hazards.
Work with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe.
Operate pipe lasers and levels effectively to establish grade.
Ensure the trench / grade is excavated to the proper depth / grade.
Follow directions of the ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading.
Conduct trench work meeting OSHA requirements.

Qualifications :

Pass pre-employment drug / alcohol screening and physical.

Proven experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator

Previous grading experience and operating compaction equipment are a plus but not required.

Valid driver's license and clean driving record

A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement is a plus but not required.

Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to lift heavy objects and work in all weather conditions.

Attention to detail and commitment to safety and job site housekeeping.

Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally.

Positive, professional attitude with a willingness to travel.

Ability to work overtime as required, including some weekends.

Physical Requirements

Able to physically lift heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) frequently throughout the work shift with or without assistance.

Frequent walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.

Standing / working on feet for extended periods and walking across uneven terrain, climbing up and down ladders and stairways

Able to work in extreme weather conditions and elements, including but not limited to heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, etc.

Frequent exposure to noise, dust, fuel, oil, or other chemicals.

Able to wear personal protective equipment and any other safety-related equipment.

Able to work a minimum of 8 hours a day and overtime as required.
