Job Summary: The Driver Instructor conducts technical training classes for commercial vehicles, providing theory, simulation, and practical driving instruction for Class A Commercial Motor Vehicles and tanker endorsement.
Essential Job Functions:

Physical Demands: Frequently be able to pull with 172 lb peak force to open engine hood, push to close, to raise and lower trailer landing gear and occasionally open and close trailer tank ports and valves. Must be able to frequently climb into and out of tractor and occasionally climb up and down tank ladders using 3 points of contact. Must have gross manipulation of hands, and arms to steer and fine manipulation of fingers to operate and adjust controls as needed inside and outside of the tractor. Must have enough leg and foot control to climb into and out of the tractor and operate foot controls. Have with or without corrective lenses near visual acuity with clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less to see truck dashboard warning lights, controls and instrumentation of the truck. A distant visual acuity with or without corrective lenses of at least 20 feet or more, peripheral vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal Meridian in each eye and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber to safely navigate vehicle through traffic, weather day or night and drive on multiple types of road surfaces (paved, gravel, etc.). Must be able to sit for long periods of time as well as walk for short distances and navigate stairs to loading docks. Have the ability to speak, express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to customers or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, and quickly. Have the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish in person speech, telephone, other remote speech and traffic warning devices. Have the ability to stoop, crawl, crouch and kneel in order to perform a full inspection of the truck and trailer.
Work Environment: The duties of this job are performed in and around milk processing plants, customer dairy production area, CMV Terminal environment, and outdoors, thereby experiencing some minor to moderate level of noise due to plant machinery, dairy farm equipment and CMV equipment. Must have a working knowledge of and physically utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit or prevent occasional exposure to various severe climate conditions, lighting conditions, fumes, dust, odors, oil, grease, and gasses.

Essential Job Functions:
- Provides CMV - DOT-Federal Rules and Regulation training, Company Policy and procedures and Compliance.
- Uses established training materials to present formal class training exercises to students.
- Uses established training materials to present training exercises and practice in preparing students to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle.
- Provides hands-on training in advanced applications, CMV training, and testing preparations in Vehicle Inspection, Skills/ Maneuvers, Range and Road Driving Skills required to meet and or exceed requirements needed to successfully pass the State Commercial Driver’s Test.
- Observe and evaluate student’s performance and development
- Provide appropriate feedback on work
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
- maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, policies and school regulations
- Prepare required reports on students and activities
- Manage student behavior in the classroom and on the range by enforcing rules and procedures
- Maintain daily attendance sheet
- Mentorship including but not limited to student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students and colleagues regarding student progress and student needs
- Keep up to date with developments in subject area
- Must ensure all required maintenance is performed on both Tractors and Trailers assigned to the Training location. Any required repairs are to be written on a DVIR and emailed to the prospective repair shop and management.
- Responsible for the collection of drug and alcohol screening tests and maintaining certification per regulations
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or management
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to pass Department of Transportation alcohol and drug screen
- Five years verifiable experience driving tractor trailer with smooth bore tanker
- Must possess and maintain a valid class A CDL with tanker endorsement and a satisfactory driving record
- Person(s) hired into this position may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, professional registration, certification or specialized education and training relevant to the position
- Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) testing and physical requirements and be knowledgeable of DOT regulations
- Exceptional driving and training skills
- The ability to be flexible, and interface professionally with all levels of internal and external customers
- Demonstrate outstanding instructional skills
- Ability to accurately maintain and organize paperwork
- Managing multiple tasks, often with competing deadlines
