JOB DESCRIPTION: MCKINNEY-VENTO DRIVER
DEPARTMENT: TRANSPORTATION

Position Summary
This position is responsible for the transportation of eligible students to and from school. The driver establishes their route and pick-up times, communicating these with the parents of those students. Many of these students live outside the school boundaries causing this route to cover many miles each day.
Qualification Requirements
- Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Must hold a standard (Class D) driver’s license; pass a physical, drug test, background check, and background driving check.
- High school diploma preferred or general education degree (GED).
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to compose and write correspondence, memos and fill out reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school and other district employees.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and drag up to 120 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Obeys all traffic laws.
- Observes all mandatory safety regulations.
- Maintains discipline when students are being transported.
- Keeps to assigned schedule.
- Performs proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Discharges students only at authorized stops.
- Reports accidents and completes required reports.
- Expected to use professional conduct at all times.
- Fulfills Board Policy to exhibit dress and appearance that is neat, clean and orderly.
- Additional duties that may be assigned by immediate supervisor or above.
Language And Grammar Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fume or airborne particles. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold (including outdoors), extreme heat (including direct sunlight), risk of electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment will vary from somewhat loud to extremely loud.
To ensure continuity of services, remote work may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for remote work will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for remote work will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Employee may occasionally be required to supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.

Physical/Mental Requirements:
Must pass annual physical.
In a normal work day, the employee must sit 2-3 hours per day, stand/walk 2 hours per day. Job requires occasional bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, occasional climbing 3 feet of steps to bus, occasional to frequent pushing/pulling. Job may require occasional assisting disabled children/students board bus. Certain routes may require the lifting of disabled children and/or assistance with wheelchairs, seat restraints etc. where the lifting requirement is greater.
Job requires employee to use both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls; to use both hands for such repetitive actions requiring simple to firm grasping. Employee must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate bus safely. Employee must possess visual requirement enough to pass driving test, read signs, road hazards, and be able to operate bus safely in adverse conditions. Employees must possess hearing requirement enough to hear riders, receive communication on radio and hear outside noises: sirens, horns, brakes, etc. that are necessary to operate bus safely. Employee must possess speaking requirement enough to give instructions/commands to riders, speak to parents, and other staff. Employees must have mobility enough to get on and off and around bus to clean and provide routine inspection.
Employee must have mental requirement to operate bus, follow safety rules, make sound decisions in often stressful situations and to handle confrontation effectively. Employee’s job requires working close to machinery; working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment; exposure to toxic gas, dust, fumes, gases. Must be a defensive driver and be extra careful at intersections, railroad crossings, and around other assembly areas.
