About Western Landowners Alliance (WLA): Founded in 2012 by landowners and managers, the organization aims to increase the wellbeing of working lands in the American West and the living communities, including human and wildlife, that depend on them.

Position Overview: The Communications Coordinator will support our water program and provide landowners and collaborative partners information on water and related resources across the West, with a primary focus within the Colorado River Basin. The Communications Coordinator will facilitate landowner outreach and communications on water-related issues, including peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, and curation and dissemination of information, success stories, resources and funding opportunities through various communication channels and mediums.

Amount of Time & Status: 40 hours a week, exempt, Monday-Friday

Location: This position is remote with preference of residency in the American West. Periodic travel will be required. 

Reports to: Communications Director

Compensation: $60,000-$75,000. Salary is commensurate with experience. Duties/Responsibilities Include:

  • Deliver timely news, information, and technical and financial resources regarding water resource management, water policy, watershed health and process-based restoration (PBR) to landowners in the West.
  • Serve as in-house copy editor and brand review for all WLA materials.
  • Inform WLA staff, members, and partners on relevant water issues.
  • Translate, curate and provide targeted information and news related to water policy issues to landowners and rural and urban communities.
  • Share success stories, lessons learned, and vision for water related resources in rural and urban landscapes.
  • Develop primers on key water issues for landowners.
  • Assist with organizing development and program events focused on water in the West, including online (webinars) and in-person events.
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer knowledge sharing on water stewardship practices (with support from other Western Water staff).
  • Translate, curate and provide information on technical and financial resources available for water related projects to WLA network.
  • In coordination with WLA communications staff:
    • Create compelling creative and expository written, video, audio and still image content, for print and web, using Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Descript and other tools. 
    • Create compelling marketing email and social media content to engage constituents and convey impact.
    • Work with outside vendors to generate digital and print marketing materials.
    • In conjunction with other Western Water staff, develop materials to execute on water strategy (i.e., program-related reports, papers, briefs, and resource materials).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience working on western water issues
  • Experience in communications, marketing or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; detail oriented, strong independent work ethic; and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment
  • Editing and graphic design skills
  • Adequate knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys etc.)
  • Experience designing and implementing email, and online marketing campaigns 
  • Quick study and enthusiastic teammate 
  • Technology-adept and flexible 
  • Experience or knowledge of agriculture, ranching, land stewardship or conservation 
  • Passionate about the landscapes of the West and the role of private land stewardship in keeping them whole and healthy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse array of stakeholders
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency with SEO/SEM campaigns is a plus

    Working Environment/Physical Activities: Work environment is an office and field setting. Physical activities include sitting at a desk and working on a keyboard and computer several hours a day, conducting business over the telephone and via email, standing for long periods of time, periodic travel and traveling long distances by vehicle (including traveling on unpaved roads). This position may also require moving materials up to 25 pounds.
