Title:                           Special Services Assistant Teacher                       

 

Qualifications:          

1. High school diploma or equivalent

2. 48 hours college credit hours, or Work Keys

3. Understanding of Children with disabilities

4. Current driver’s license and reliable transportation, applicable

 

Reports To:                Principal (and Works Under Direction of the Classroom Teacher)

 

Job Goal:                    The Special Education Assistant Teacher supports the teacher in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), managing classroom activities, and fostering an inclusive learning environment. This role requires occasional travel between schools or district sites to provide services and support to students across multiple locations.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

Instructional Support:

  1. Assist the teacher in implementing lesson plans and adapting instructional materials to meet student needs.
  2. Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to reinforce learning objectives.
  3. Provide support for students using assistive technology, communication devices, or other specialized equipment.

Behavioral Support:

  1. Implement and monitor behavior intervention plans (BIPs) under the guidance of the teacher or behavior specialist.
  2. Support students in developing social, emotional, and self-regulation skills.

Classroom Management:

  1. Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment.
  2. Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, or other non-instructional times.
  3. Assist with classroom organization, including the preparation of materials and resources.

Documentation and Reporting:

  1. Collect and record data to track student progress on IEP goals.
  2. Assist in preparing progress reports, assessments, and other required documentation.
  3. Maintain confidentiality of student information at all times.

 

Professional Collaboration:

  1. Participate in team meetings, IEP meetings, and professional development sessions as required.
  2. Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to align instructional and behavioral strategies.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  2. Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team or independently.
  3. Patience, empathy, and adaptability to meet the diverse needs of students.
  4. Basic technology skills, including proficiency in email.

 

Working Conditions:

  1. Must be able to assist with student mobility, if necessary.
  2. May require standing, sitting, bending, or kneeling for extended periods.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the special services teacher, principal or Special Services director may assign, to support students with disabilities (i.e., toiletry, personal needs, bus duties, etc.).

 

Terms of                     187 days a year.  Salary to be established by the Board.
