General Summary
Western Michigan University (WMU) is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the next Associate Vice President for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education (HIGE). This role is pivotal in advancing WMU’s commitment to global engagement and international education. The successful candidate will lead initiatives to build and enhance international and transnational partnerships, enhance global learning opportunities, and support a diverse population of international students and scholars. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President will oversee the academic, programmatic, administrative, and fiscal leadership of the Institute.

The Associate Vice President will play a crucial role in implementing WMU’s Strategic Plan 2022-32, which emphasizes academic excellence, community building, diversity, equity, and inclusion, internationalization, research, sustainability, and well-being. This leader will work closely with the Faculty Senate International Education Council and other stakeholders to promote global outreach and engagement. Key responsibilities include forging international partnerships, recruiting international students, supporting study abroad programs, and integrating global perspectives into the curriculum.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strategic leadership and a commitment to fostering a globally engaged campus culture. They will enhance WMU’s global reputation, develop and manage international agreements, and promote initiatives that advance the university’s scholarly mission. The role also involves engaging with the local and global community, developing, and mentoring the HIGE staff, and supporting international alumni.

WMU seeks candidates with strong backgrounds in international education, with experience in strategic enrollment management, international student support, and faculty development. They will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a proven record of accomplishment of administrative leadership, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

WMU is a public research university located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, known for its strong commitment to student success and global engagement. HIGE serves as the hub for international activities at WMU, supporting over 1,170 international students and offering more than 80 study abroad programs. The Institute is dedicated to creating and sustaining an environment that facilitates global engagement for the WMU community.

Major Duties
The Associate Vice President for HIGE will direct the University’s work in forging and sustaining mutually beneficial international partnerships; recruiting diverse population of international students and scholars; sending students, faculty, and staff abroad; supporting internationalization of the curriculum; providing campus- and community-based opportunities for global engagement; and engaging with WMU’s international alumni. Furthermore, the Associate Vice President for HIGE will:
Demonstrate Strategic Leadership and Global Engagement for the Benefit of the University
  • Promote a culture that contributes to the University’s global strategy and agenda.
  • Negotiate new constructive intercollegiate partnerships and programs that advance the strategic plans of HIGE and the University.
  • Enhance the global image and reputation of WMU’s programs.
  • Develop and manage academic, educational, and commercial agreements which enhance the global engagement of WMU.
  • Promote initiatives within and outside WMU that advance its scholarly mission.
  • In collaboration with the Faculty Senate International Education Council, develop, implement, and monitor initiatives to achieve the University’s strategic goal of being globally engaged.
Advance Global Engagement Opportunities for WMU and Kalamazoo Communities
  • Develop and promote broad involvement in WMU’s international activities within the University and local community.
  • Engage in the University’s international development and alumni affairs activities.
  • Oversee campus visits of guests, dignitaries, and public figures from international locations.
  • Develop proactive and comprehensive strategies to encourage WMU students to pursue a global education, participate in study or work abroad programs, interact in meaningful ways with international students, and participate in global activities on campus and in the community.
Partner with Campus Stakeholders to Enroll and Support a Global Student Body
  • Participate in creating and implementing a comprehensive University enrollment management strategy which achieves a higher diversification of the WMU student body.
  • Establish and maintain best practices for international enrollment management (admission, recruitment, retention, graduation).
  • Enhance institutional support for international students throughout their experience at WMU.
Effectively Lead the Institute’s Staff and Promote Organizational Development
  • Provide leadership and supervision to all designated HIGE departments, centers, and institutes.
  • Provide leadership for the assessment and continuous improvement of organizational performance.
  • Foster faculty development of curricula with strong international components.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Five years of related work experience in a supervisory role.
  • An earned graduate degree in an academic or professional field from an accredited institution.
  • A career demonstrating the highest ethical standards.
  • Record of distinguished professional accomplishment and demonstrated intellectual leadership.
  • Record of dynamic, culturally sensitive leadership with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in English and the ability to effectively communicate across diverse cultures and international contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and build an exceptional team of professionals and form collaborative relationships in an atmosphere of shared governance.
  • Demonstrated skill in decision-making, problem-solving, advocacy, team building, delegation, and negotiation.
  • A successful record of administrative experience, including the management of a complex budget and organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fostering diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent analytical, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills that are adaptable to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience building a thriving international student body and contributing to international student success.
  • Demonstrated expertise in international student recruiting, admissions, and retention.

Desired Qualifications
  • Eight years of related work experience in a supervisory role in a college or university setting.
  • Earned doctorate in an academic or professional field from an accredited institution.
  • Successful record of administrative experience in a university or college setting.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, including curriculum development.
  • Experience with intensive English programs.
  • Proven fund-raising ability and alumni relations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing study abroad, exchange, transnational, and dual-degree programs in collaboration with academic colleges and departments.
  • Continued residence for more than one year in a country other than place of origin.
  • Strong intercultural and administrative leadership qualities, including diplomacy, collaboration, strategic thinking, effective listening and interpersonal communication, intercultural competency, and cultural fluency.
