What are the responsibilities and job description for the Strategic Communications Managing Editor position at Western Michigan University?
Western Michigan University seeks a communications professional who has mastered the art of storytelling, excels at editing and can make compelling copy and images more engaging through skillful content curation. The successful candidate will apply these skills to manage the University’s news site, flagship magazine and other communication channels, working collaboratively with content creators of all kinds in the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications and across campus.
Major duties:
- Manages communication channels administered by the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications, helping to deploy University news, features, social media messaging and other content in a manner that engages and informs internal and external audiences while elevating and advancing the University's brand messages.
- Edits for accuracy, grammar and style the WMU News site, the University’s flagship social media accounts, executive communications and other communications channels under the purview of the associate vice president for strategic communications.
- Ensures news, features and other communication are posted on the most strategic WMU communication channel, given the objective of the content and its targeted audiences. Slots and mines content from news and communication sites across campus for elevation to WMU News and other communication channels, including social media.
- Provide editorial assistance for executive-level and Universitywide communications, including speeches, remarks and other high-profile messages.
- Works closely with the associate vice president for strategic communications guiding content creators to conceptualize and develop compelling stories that promote the University's brand messages.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three years’ relevant experience.
- Experience working in a news-oriented environment as an editor, writer, producer or reporter.
Desired qualifications:
• Eight years of experience in a news-oriented environment as an editor, writer, producer or reporter.
This is an in-person position. However, the University has a telecommuting and hybrid work policy that allows employees to work remotely up to one day per week at their supervisor’s discretion.
