Description
PURPOSE STATEMENT
A nurse extern is a student nurse who assists their preceptor with nursing care to patients assigned to his/her team. The nurse extern is responsible to the preceptor to which he/she is assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Demonstrate positive customer service relations.
- Implement patient care under the guidance of the preceptor.
- Assist co-workers as needed/requested, within the scope of the nurse extern.
- Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/Values positively.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other essential duties as assigned.
Program Expectations
- This program will start on June 2, 2025, and conclude on July 26, 2025
- Selected students will work 3, 12-hour shifts in their assigned department each week during the 8-week program.
Requirements
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Student in good standing of a nationally accredited nursing program with completion of nursing fundamentals course.
- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
- Current BLS required.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 12 hours a day
- Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard
- Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines
- Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing
- Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition
- Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs
- Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces
