What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Instructional Aide position at Western PA School for Blind Children?
Western PA School for Blind Children, located in Oakland, provides a one-of-a-kind educational experience that empowers students to realize their full potential. Founded in 1887, we have about 200 students in our school all ages between 3-22. Within that range we have three groups based off age range (primary, middle, and secondary). This position is responsible for assisting visually impaired, multi-disabled children with daily living needs and classroom instruction. We have the option of being assigned to a specific classroom age range, or being a floater and helping all classrooms! Both are full time positions because even if a classroom is full they can always use additional help! We can also organize a part-time schedule for persons who are interested.
We are hiring for the remainder of this school year through June 2025 and then continuing into next school year! We also have an optional extended school year.
The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 7:30 am - 3:30 pm.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate's Degree preferred
- Experience working with those who have severe disabilities, preferably in an educational setting
- ability to frequently assist students in all areas of self-care, including lifting and positioning.
- Ability to obtain proper clearances for Acts 34, 114 and 151 (Criminal, Child Abuse, Federal Criminal)
- Experience with Children ages 3-8 years is highly preferred.
Job Duties:
- Assist children in activities of daily living: dressing, toileting, lifting and feeding students (including G-tube feeding).
- To assist children with dressing, self-care, transportation, mealtime, and other duties as directed by department managers.
- To assist the teacher in routine activities of the classroom including programming and data keeping.
- To provide consistency as necessary with behavioral, therapeutic and educational plans and programs.
- To accept/follow directives and supervision regarding the students and their programs.
- To be flexible regarding daily assignments (in the morning and throughout the workday).
