Job Summary
Western Piedmont Community College is accepting applications for a Talent Search Success Coach for the federal TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program. This position is 100% funded by a grant from the Department of Education in conjunction with WPCC. The position is contingent on continued federal funding. We are not guaranteed, but expect continued funding for a new five-year grant cycle to begin September 1, 2026 and continue through August 31, 2031. ETS has been in existence at WPCC for over 25 years providing academic, career, and financial counseling to over 650 income eligible and potential first generation 6th – 12th grade students each year. The goals of the TRIO Talent Search program are to help students achieve their dream of going to college by persisting in school, graduating high school, entering postsecondary education and completing a degree. Applicants with similar backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Requires occasional evening and weekend work hours.
Under the direction of the ETS Director and the Dean of Student Services, the Talent Search Success Coach will conduct Project services and activities for approximately 350 participants in assigned schools.
Identify and assist Participants who have potential to succeed in higher education.
Assess the qualifications of referred students and determine eligibility for participation in the ETS Project.
Collect academic and personal information on referred students.
Maintain data and records of all services provided to Participants in the Project.
Assist in arranging, coordinating, and/or conducting activities necessary for achieving the Project’s objectives.
Assist in the evaluation of the Project.
Prepare, submit, and respond to all requests by the ETS Director for record keeping.
Encourage ETS Participants who withdrawal from public schools to reenter a secondary program.
Provide mandatory services to ETS Participants in their respective schools regularly.
Make Parent/Teacher contacts on behalf of the ETS Participant as necessary.
Make Burke Collegiate Scholar Presentations to elementary feeder schools yearly.
Maintain positive relationships between WPCC and BCPS staff, as well as other local agencies.
Ability to work flexible hours during specific programming events that take place outside of the normal work day, including travel and extended overnight trip activities. Personal travel utilizing one’s own vehicle is necessary at times as well as some overnight travel for staff development.
Perform other duties as needed, e.g. supervise groups in cultural, career and educational exploration opportunities, etc. at the direction of the ETS Director.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education, background, and/or training equivalent to a bachelor’s degree required.
2. Ability to exercise discretion and judgment in handling confidential material required.
3. Valid NC Driver’s license.
Physical Demands: The functions of the job are usually performed sitting, but may involve some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting up to 50 lbs., walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. Summer activities require a variety of physical demands, such as extensive walking, outdoor sports such as canoeing, hiking, horseback riding and swimming. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
Working Conditions: Noise levels are usually moderate. May be exposed to UV light during summer activities.
Hazard Assessment: UV light from outdoor summer activities
Personal Protective Equipment: Sunscreen/sunblock with SPF greater than or equal to 15 that provides both UVA and UVB protection
