Job Duties

To provide direct patient care in a safe, therapeutic environment for a specific patient population in a 24 hour 7 day a week psychiatric hospital that conforms to care and treatment policies and procedures and demonstrates knowledge of population specific needs and competencies.

  • Providing quality care as a part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Provide work direction to PNA staff, under supervision of an RN
  • Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
  • Creating healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
  • Observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional wellbeing, and other situations
  • Documenting and communicating
  • Using specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery
  • Prioritizes time to meet patient’s needs and provides direct patient care duties as assigned and when finished with medication administration.
  • Implements all individual treatment plans as written.
  • Administer medications, does treatments, and reports and documents patient education and response according to policy and procedure

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must hold or be eligible for licensure in Virginia. Individuals with compact licenses are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of illnesses, treatment modalities, and medication administration.
  • Proven ability to implement nursing care plans and provide guidance to staff.
  • Strong delegation and supervisory skills for nursing personnel.
  • Effective communication skills, including written, verbal, and sign communication.
  • Capability to collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Competence in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
  • Flexibility to work overtime during staffing emergencies in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital, including potential 16-hour shifts when necessary.
  • Completion of annual competency training, including TOVA III with physical restraints.
  • Maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrated understanding of recovery-focused and trauma-informed care.

Additional Considerations

Experience in psychiatric nursing.

Proficiency in Spanish.

Status as a veteran or a veteran's spouse.
