Position Title:  Online Medical Billing & Coding Instructor

Department:  Faculty

Reports to:  Program Director

Supervises:  N/A

Classification:  Salaried

Status:          Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW:  Follow all curriculum requirements provided by Western Technical College, encourage student participation, and lead student discussions to keep them active and engaged in the online learning environment. Provide feedback to students and assign grades to their coursework. Assess and monitor individual student performance to ensure they are keeping up with the curriculum and not falling behind. Communicate with students to provide reports and updates through online Teams and/or email. Offer designated virtual support hours, allowing students to reach out at their convenience for tutoring and assistance. Track attendance and report absentee students on retention reports weekly. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  

  1. Grade, exams, assignments, quizzes, and papers within three workdays while providing feedback to each assignment, exam, and quiz. Instructors will be required to post on the announcement several times a week with information to facilitate learning. Meet with the Program Director to determine grading criteria.
  2. Track and record individual and overall grades in multiple formats, spreadsheets, or online learning management systems.
  3. Virtual Office Hours: Instructors will be available for students through scheduled online sessions. Face-to-face tutoring will be facilitated via Calendly, allowing students to book one-on-one sessions at their convenience. Additionally, each cohort will have a dedicated evening session once a week for group support. All virtual office hours will be listed on Calendly.
  4. Turnaround/Feedback on Course Content: Instructors respond within 24 hours, Monday through Friday to student questions such as lecture topics, discussion boards, online assignments, uploaded assignments, and outside work. 
  5. Instructors will provide and record an advising form for any student who does not pass the mid-term or final with a 65% or better, as well as for any student whose overall grade falls below 65% in the program. Tutoring will be offered to support these students in improving their performance.
  6. Effective online communication – need to communicate professionally always and when providing feedback on discussion boards to each student, it must be constructive and provoke critical thinking to have an ongoing “thread” of discussions with students in the class. “Great job”, “Awesome Answer”, “Superb”, and “Nice” are not thought-provoking responses. 
  7. Weekly Department Meeting - Instructors will meet weekly with the Program Director to discuss assignments, classroom policies, and any relevant program updates.
  8. Educates and provides training to students in his or her field of expertise using accepted and approved instructional approaches.
  9. Report any student misconduct, including instances of academic dishonesty, to the Program Director as soon as the instructor has knowledge of such misconduct and address the student’s misconduct.
  10. Weekly retention outreach every Monday, instructors will conduct retention outreach to students who have not attended the course, participated in discussion posts, or completed any assignments. A report will be submitted to the Program Director.
  11. Instructors must complete Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain their certification, as well as Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) required for their instructor position.
  12. Instructors are responsible for regularly updating and maintaining their Canvas course to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with the curriculum. This includes updating course materials, assignments, announcements, and discussion boards, as well as ensuring that all content is accessible and relevant to student learning.
  13. Instructors are responsible for keeping the Campus system updated with accurate and timely information, including grades, attendance, and student progress. This ensures transparency, supports student success and aligns with institutional reporting requirements. Regular updates should reflect participation, assignment completion, and overall course engagement.
  14. Instructors must be available to work flexible hours, including evening sessions for each cohort, to accommodate students' varying schedules. They will use Calendly to offer one-on-one tutoring sessions, allowing students to book appointments based on their availability. Instructors should also be prepared to facilitate group sessions and respond to student needs outside of traditional working hours, ensuring consistent support throughout the course.
  15. Perform other work-related duties that are assigned. 

Requirements

 EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Minimum of certificate of completion as a Medical Billing and Coder.
  2. Certified through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC and/or CCS) is preferred.
  3. Three years of experience in the subject field within the last 10 years
  4. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level (preferred). 
  5. Faculty teaching any online education courses, or in any of the online programs must demonstrate proficiency in operating computer programs as Word and Excel. 
  6. Must be able to work flexible hours.
  7. To telework, the employee is responsible for ensuring to have the needed equipment and technology to perform the essential job functions (i.e., cell phone, internet).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills, plus analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  3. Must be customer service oriented.
  4. Ability to use Teams and/or Zoom
  5. Ability to meet or exceed the company’s attendance and punctuality standards.
  6. Ability to evaluate objectively, fairly, and consistently.
  7. Creativity and initiative.
  8. Ability to correctly use and demonstrate all normal equipment and tools within the subject field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the responsibilities of the job, these work environment characteristics are representative of the environment the job holder will encounter. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment may usually be quiet to moderate.
