What are the responsibilities and job description for the Human Resources Specialist position at Western Virginia Regional Jail?
The Western Virginia Regional Jail is seeking to fill the position of a full-time, Monday-Friday, onsite civilian Human Resources Specialist, with a start date of June 16, 2025.
This position reports directly to the Human Resources Director and has responsibility for general HR functions. Specific responsibilities include assistance with retention and recruiting, on-boarding/off-boarding, performance evaluations and job descriptions; compensation and benefits administration; assistance with the development, implementation and administration of HR policies, programs, and procedures; maintaining the employee handbook; maintaining personnel records and files; Workers Compensation, FMLA and STD/LTD claims; HRIS management and compliance with all employment-related and other federal and state laws and regulations.
Qualified applicants will possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources, including records management and maintenance. Required is the ability to arrive at sound decisions through detailed analysis and evaluation of information received from a variety of sources. Also required is the ability to plan, set priorities and organize numerous work assignments, and prepare comprehensive records and reports using multiple systems such as HRIS (Global Human Resources) or Microsoft Office. The ability to handle confidential information with discretion and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental supervisors, employees, and the general public is a primary qualification for this position.
Required Qualifications Unless Otherwise Noted:
- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree with major coursework in human resources/personnel management, business, public administration, education, or related field, and a minimum of 1 year of experience working in Human Resources, OR a minimum of at least three (3) years of working in Human Resources experience;
- SHRM Human Resources Certification, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred;
- Must be a citizen of the United States, be at least 21 years of age, and have a valid Virginia driver’s license with reliable transportation to and from work Monday-Friday, and subject to a full background investigation, including and pre-employment physical with a drug screen and psychological test;
- Working knowledge of current federal and state employment laws and regulations;
- Broad understanding of major human resources functional areas, including payroll;
- Proficiency in or knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, HRIS systems (Global Human Resources/GHR preferably), and Laserfiche document imaging;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability;
- Very strong verbal and written communications skills, and
- Highly developed organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
Salary range is $46,784 – $59,499, based on experience, etc. Position offers VRS retirement, health, dental, and vision, and other benefits, as well as paid sick leave/vacation. The WVRJ also has an onsite employee fitness room.
