About the Position

The temporary, hourly fill-in Primary Care Physician provides ambulatory health care service delivery at the WWU Student Health Center, as directed by the Medical Director.

The Primary Care Physician provides ambulatory health care service delivery to Western Washington University Students at the Student Health Center. We actively seek candidates from diverse backgrounds including communities of color, the LGBTQ community, veterans, and people with disabilities. Physician position will work 1-5 days per week through June at the Student Health Center working with diverse students and staff to support health and wellness for Western Washington University students.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness and those elements of primary medical care that is reasonable within the constraints of the nature, funding and calendar of operations of the Student Health Center.
  • Treatment and management of chronic disease.
  • Physical examinations for general health care and pre-participation occupational / travel / MVA.
  • Minor medical and surgical procedures.
  • Evaluation and plan of care for accidents and emergencies including stabilization prior to transfer to the emergency room.
  • Provide a holistic approach to patient care, including providing patient education as appropriate and participating as requested by the director in the activities of the Prevention and Wellness Services.
  • Provide in-service and consultation for nurses and other staff in Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services as necessary to update their skills and perform their duties.
  • Coordination and follow-up of medical referrals in the community as necessary.
  • Provide services and conduct work assignments in a positive and inclusive manner that supports the inclusivity and equity objectives of the campus community.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal continuing medical education program of relevance to assigned duties.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities that support the continued growth of cultural responsiveness and effectiveness in the areas of access, inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural communication, and other related topics.
  • Participate in peer review with other clinicians.
  • Provide medical consultation and participate in collaborative care for student with interdisciplinary team of advanced practice clinicians, nurses, behavioral health counselors, and campus and community partners as needed.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the health center director.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited medical school.
  • M.D. or D.O. Licensure in the State of Washington (or license eligible at the time of employment).
  • ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) approved board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics.
  • Experience diagnosing and treating adult (college-aged) patients.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Valid Drug Enforcement Administration certification for prescription of controlled substances.
  • Experience in practicing primary care medicine for a minimum of three years.
  • Experience assessing, diagnosing, treating mental health disorders within the scope of primary care.
  • Demonstrated ability and sensitivity in working effectively with people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience delivering services to individuals who hold marginalized identities, such as Latine and Black students, disabled students, and / or LGBTQ students.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a University or College Health Clinic setting.
  • A strong commitment to creating a culturally responsive environment for staff and students, the delivery of programs that support diversity objectives, and the development of cultural engagement and responsiveness skills.
  • Record of commitment to advancing access, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in healthcare, higher education and / or the workplace setting.
  • Masters of Public Health with experience managing communicable disease outbreaks.
  • Experience in Travel Medicine Clinic management and oversight.
  • Experience working in an urgent care clinic setting.
  • One or more of the following certifications : Current Board Certification in Adolescent Medicine (ABFM)Current Board Certification in Sports Medicine (ABFM)Current Board Certification in Addiction Medicine (ASAM)
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Maintain a current unrestricted license to practice medicine and surgery within the State of Washington
  • Maintain Board Specialty Certification, memberships in professional organizations and local hospital staff as appropriate to the needs of the Student Health Center, and maintenance of good professional standing.
  • Maintain BCLS certification
  • Successful fit testing and the ability to wear a N95 mask for several hours
  • Maintains Tetanus, pertussis, influenza, and COVID vaccinations
  • Proof of measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B and varicella immunity
  • Salary $83 - $95 / hour depending on qualifications and experience Benefits Information
