BILINGUAL PARAPROFESSIONAL

Westfield Public Schools seeks qualified applicants for the following district position. JOB GOAL: A bilingual paraprofessional, under general supervision, provides assistance to an ESL and/or Sheltered English Immersion Content Teachers to perform a variety of tasks relating to the physical and instructional needs of new language learning pupils in the English Learner Program to meet the program goals. RESPONSIBILITIES: Implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the ESL and classroom teacher in improving students' academic success. Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher. Support individual or small group work according to students’ levels of language acquisition and cognitive development. Foster a supportive relationship with students. Communicate and work successfully with staff and all students Provide clarification in native language when requested by classroom teacher. Provide support to acclimate newly arrived students to their school's routines Have basic computer skills, including experience using Google Classroom and various translation programs Work in assigned school(s) across the district based on student language needs as identified by the English Learner Program Supervisor Serve as a family liaison and communicate relevant information between the school and families Advocate for family needs and help connect to community resources Attend after-school events such as Open Houses, ELPAC meetings, Parent/Teacher Conferences, etc. and provide oral translations for families Assist in communication between student and teacher or administrator, when needed. Participate in in-service training programs. Any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee. REPORTS TO: English Learner Program Supervisor and Director of Assessment and Accountability The terms of employment and salary schedule will be commensurate with the Westfield Public Schools Unit D contract. Performance in this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation.
