What are the responsibilities and job description for the SPECIAL EDUCATION EXTENDED YEAR SUMMER PROGRAM 2025 - NURSES position at Westfield Public Schools?
Applications will be accepted for school nurse positions in the Westfield Public School District for the 2024 Special Education Extended Year Program. This program is scheduled to begin July 7, 2025 and continue for four weeks, Monday – Thursday (no Friday dates) ending on July 31, 2025.
Training Date:
July 1, 2025 (all staff) 8:30 am – 3:00 pm with ½ hour unpaid lunch
No School on Fridays Preference will be given to candidates possessing previous Westfield Public School Summer Program experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedule and is present at all school health services, including all physical examinations, all immunization clinics, vision and hearing checks and scoliosis checks.
- Maintain up-to-date health records.
- Assume responsibility for informing faculty and staff of those students with special health problems, i.e. allergic bee sting, diabetic, heart, petit mal, etc.
- Interprets the health status of a pupil to him/her, the parents, and school personnel without breaching confidentiality.
- Observes students on a regular basis to determine health needs.
- Authorize the exclusion and/or re-admission of a student with contagious or infectious diseases.
- Administer first said in accordance with established first aid procedures.
- Assist principal in establishing sanitary conditions within the school.
- Serve as a health consultant and resource person for the classroom teacher conducting health-related classes when requested as well as teacher health classes.
- Contact and visit homes of children referred by principal where health related counseling is required.
- Maintain adequate first aid supplies in each school.
- Advise on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of the individual student through the Chapter 766 process.
- Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
- Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
- Participate in in-service training programs.
- Prepare and submit reports for the Superintendent of Schools as required.
- Make formal referrals to specialists when appropriate and conduct follow-up of the referrals.
- Work with community agencies when necessary.
- Assist in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives of the school department.
- Will be trained to do vision and hearing screening with the proper use of equipment.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned.
