Description : Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to drive gasoline or diesel-powered tractor-trailer combinations, usually long distances, to transport and deliver products and materials in loose or packaged form to destinations. This position is primarily Over-The-Road driving up to six days per week and five overnights, and as little as 5 days per week and zero overnights.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works to supply products and services that meet or exceed the customers’ expectations. Follows the documented quality systems and processes that are continually being improved to satisfy our customers’ needs.
  • Arrive on time for dispatch to ensure material arrives to the customer in a timely manner.
  • Inspects truck for defects before and after trips and submits the report indicating the truck condition. Must conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • The driver is responsible for proper load securement and tarping.
  • Drives truck to destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and skill in maneuvering vehicle in difficult situations, such as narrow passageways. Deliver material in a timely and efficient manner and handle any issues the customer may have.
  • Maintains driver log according to FMCSA and DOT regulations using electronic log.
  • Complete proper paperwork, packing lists, bills of lading, etc.
  • Interact with customers in a respective manner to positively represent the company.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and company policies.
  • Must have the ability to handle various weather conditions while on the road.
  • May perform or assist workers in loading and unloading truck.
  • May assist Logistics Manager or department in other duties and special projects.

  • Transportation : Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits.
  • Safety and Security; Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safety for the protection of people and property.
  • Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment : Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as tractor-trailers, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
  • Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material : Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates : Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings : Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
  • Communicating with Persons outside Organization : Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.
  • Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards : Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  • Mathematics : Knowledge of arithmetic and its application.
  • Tools : Electronic logs, tractor / trailers, personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety vest, safety glasses, etc.), and company issued cell phone for business use and communication.
  • Qualifications

  • This particular position requires the individual to have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); some work-related experience, an appropriate commercial driver’s license(s) to operate assigned vehicle(s); and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Class A License required
  • Ability to pass DOT physical .
  • Insurability for driving purposes.

  • Previous experience securing loads on trucks.

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Working Environment and Conditions

  • Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be in a stationary position and move about the buildings. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and be able to communicate verbally and in writing and take direction. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will frequently be required to operate truck, forklift, and crane equipment as well as use eye-hand coordination. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Work Environment : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. During busy periods, the employee may be required to work over to complete all deliveries. Driving in inclement weather may occur.
