Westford Academy School Nurse
OVERVIEW - The school nurse is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life long achievement of students. Westford Public School Nurses promote student health and safety, intervene with health issues and collaborate with other school members to build an active learner. We provide an array of health services and are available for consultation.
QUALIFICATIONS - Valid current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Massachusetts Baccalaureate or Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing program Certified or eligible for certification as a school nurse through the Massachusetts Department of Education Minimum of two years experience in community health, school nursing, pediatric nursing or a related field of nursing.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Assess and evaluate student health
- Assume the responsibility for assessment and triage of sick and injured children and staff
- Student – Parent – School Personnel liaison
- Assist in the identification and education of students with special health problems and special educational needs
- Respond to frequently encountered health problems:
- Nutritional concerns
- Substance abuse
- Provide selected health services for school personnel and students.
- Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease
- Coordinate health services with health education and community agencies
- Observe school facilities and recommend modification necessary to maintain optimum health and safety of students and school personnel
- Review and update policies/procedures
- Screenings and examinations coordination and review:
- Grade 11 and athletic physical exams
- Vision and hearing screening and referrals as needed
- Maintain accurate immunization records per state and local regulations
- Administer medications per school department and Massachusetts Department of Public Health policy
- Classroom resource person
- Individual and group health education
- Collaborate with Town Health Department and Local Pediatricians
