What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gross Tech position at Westlake Dermatology?
Gross Techs are responsible for skillfully preserving and dissecting skin tissue specimens. Promotes quality client/patient relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model for behavior. Respect and maintain the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. Works with minimal direction; consults with technologists and general supervisor as needed. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and laboratory clients. Operates general laboratory equipment, including by not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and, and microscopes. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Collect patient tissue specimens with appropriate logging of specimens at pick up
• Sorting patient specimens and entering specimen information in our computer system for accessioning
• Provide the gross description, and dissection of surgical specimens
• Diagram pertinent gross specimens as necessary
• Operate a cassette labeler, and operate a tissue processor
• Perform equipment maintenance as needed
• Record equipment log data, and documentation required to manage the daily work flow and provide QC/QA controls
• Print and collate case worksheets, filing slides, jars, and paperwork, organizing waste and inventory
• Distribute cases to pathologists for diagnosis
• Understands and follows all OSHA guidelines
• Respects and maintains confidentiality of information relative to clients and patients
• Communicates with laboratory staff and its clients to ensure quality patient care.
• Demonstrates interpersonal skills required to successfully preform as a team member in a constantly changing environment.
Qualifications and skills: Must meet minimal CLIA requirements of testing personnel for high complexity testing
Education: Requirements include an associate's degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology or equivalent. Candidate will need to provide official transcripts to be credentialed before being hired.
