What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary School Counselor position at Westside Community Schools?
Reports to: Building Principal
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors/Masters Degrees in Education
- Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with endorsements appropriate for guidance and counseling services as required by NDE Rules 10 and 24
- Knowledge of State law and School Board policies related to school guidance and counseling
Preferred Skills:
- Understanding of the developmental issues of the students to which he/she is assigned.
- Ability to communicate effectively with families, students, teachers and administrators.
- Ability to provide conflict resolution with/for families, students, teachers and administrators.
- Skills to work with students in groups and individually.
- Thorough understanding of state testing requirements.
- Thorough understanding of state and district credit and graduation requirements.
- Understanding of staff and student master schedules.
- Knowledge of mental health community resources and agencies and the ability to access these resources.
- Knowledge of career and post secondary options for secondary students, including college admission and financial aid.
- Ability/skills to counsel students, parents, and administrators in the delivery of a Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program.
- Ability to survey a campus and create a guidance program in response to the needs of the campus.
- Ability to provide and willingness to attend professional development related to the knowledge of job skills.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Technological skills required for the position.
Physical Effort and Work Environment:
Willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom. This includes outside activities for student supervision and inside where some offices, classrooms and areas may not be air conditioned.
