Westtown School seeks a part-time Middle School Digital Art Teacher to begin in August 2025.
Westtown School is an independent, Quaker co-educational, pre-K to 12 college preparatory day and boarding school located in suburban West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia. The successful candidate will be a motivated art educator with strong content knowledge and a keen interest in and enthusiasm for working with Middle School students. The Digital Art Teacher will join a team of experienced arts educators committed to developing each student's individual artistic voice. An artist-teacher with an interest in pedagogy, an understanding of art as a tool for learning and social change, and a commitment to creating art that asks and solicits big questions will thrive in our dynamic program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches 4 Middle School art classes: 6th-grade Creative Process, 7th-grade Digital Storytelling, 8th-grade Digital Art, and Digital Publishers (elective course, spring semester only).- Supervises the creation of the digital yearbook and paper supplement through the Digital Publishers class.
- Integrates technology to enhance instruction and engagement with students;
- Develops culturally competent and responsive lessons and learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
- Contributes to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a program that reflects diverse cultures and perspectives;
- Differentiate lessons, where appropriate, to ensure that all students can access the curriculum;
- Adept at using multiple methods of assessment to evaluate student learning;
Actively involves students in the classroom through student-centered lessons, group work, project-based and/or inquiry-based learning;
- Communicates effectively with all constituents – students, colleagues, administrators, and parents;
- Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader and community member.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in art or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred;- A minimum of 3 years of relevant classroom teaching experience or the equivalent, preferably working with Middle School students;
- Strong visual art skills, including experience with animation and proficiency with Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign);
- A collaborative approach to teaching and learning;
- A commitment to meeting the unique academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs of Middle School students;
- Familiarity with Google products and the integration of a learning management system, Canvas, into best teaching practices;
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
- A strong character with a team-oriented spirit and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
- A strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an appreciation for Quaker values and how these inform community processes (meeting structures, decision-making, student discipline, etc.) and interactions.
